Story behind the song
This song was written about a wonderful couple, their names are Otha (the 'O' in his name is the long 'o' sound like the 'o' in go) and Connie Shurden. A while back Otha suffered a serious stroke and almost died. He was hospitalized for several weeks. Since he's been home, his recovery has been slow. After Connie brought him home from the hospital, I was talking to Connie on the phone one evening and she asked me if I would write a song about two birds. One bird was sick and the other bird nursed the sick bird back to health. The two birds, of course, were Connie and Otha. Connie wanted the song to be a gift for Otha to express her love for him and her desire to take care of him. I was touched by the idea and wrote "Let's Call It Love" for them. While I was writing the song, I came up with the idea to mention the sacrifice that Connie is making to care for the husband she loves so much who is very ill and will need a long time to recover. ~ Lenny Berger, Songwriter
Lyrics
Winter was coming, it was time to fly south There were barely the crumbs to feed every bird's mouth The days had turned cold and the nights were much worse To stay any longer would just be a curse The birds knew tomorrow would be the right day They would take to the sky and be on their way But one of the birds had just broken a wing He couldn't fly, so he wouldn't sing She said, "I'll stay behind with you I'll keep you warm No matter what happens We'll weather the storm I'll comfort you, care for you Nurse back your wing So you can fly high again by the time it's next spring" CHORUS: There should be a word named for her sacrifice A word we can use and won't have to think twice With the right shade of meaning and easy to spell A word that's so simple we remember it well What should it be Let's call it love, let's call it love Her sacrifice helped him believe he could cope She kept up his spirits so he wouldn't lose hope When spring came again and new life was revelaed She had no doubt that his wing had healed They flew off together and headed so high The birds just appeared as two specks in the sky He felt the warm rays on his wings and that's when Deep in his heart her words echoed again "I'll stay behind with you I'll keep you warm No matter what happens We'll weather the storm I'll comfort you, care for you Nurse back your wing So you can fly high again By the time it's next spring" CHORUS: Let's call it love
