They say not to judge a book by its cover. Never is that sentiment truer than in the case alternative nu-metal powerhouse EVEN X. Mixed by Logan Mader (Puddle Of Mud, Junkie XL), the band’s debut album, Angry Mirror, is a brutal sonic landscape in which a swirling sea of melody and rhythm not only assaults the senses, but surprisingly elevates the spirit as well. While many of their contemporaries spend their time bemoaning their existence, EVEN X paint a picture from a more honest palate, in life is neither black nor white, but rather a gothic shade of grey.
With riffs that are as a fluid as they are unapologetically heavy, air-tight grooves and raging vocals, the EVEN X sound demands a synergy among the players. They view their music as tool of communication; not between man and his state, but rather between man and his state of mind. Their aim is to facilitate an internal spiritual resolve; not as possessors of enlightenment, but rather as fellow travels on the oftentimes bumpy road of life. Songs such as “Chills,” “Chain Me Down,” and “Let The Bitch Come Up,” are damning charges against the religious leadership and advocate the necessity to cast them off in order to achieve spiritual solace. With the removal of the clergy from the process, the path to self-realization is explored in songs like “Searching,” “In My Rage” and the album’s title track, while “Awake” and “Enemy” look at the world through the newfound lens of self-awareness.
The issues that the band brings to the surface with Angry Mirror may not be pretty, but they are the ties that bind humanity together. The end result is an unforgettable journey that stays with you long after the album has left your CD player. In the process, EVEN X has created an album that will not only kick your ass, but haunt your soul.
