7 YellaRey LaBlaq's most recent endeavor is the formation of a group called The Sound Souljahz, more Hip-Hop in its essence, being that the members are all producers and vocalist as well. The name comes from his Original Artist name, 1stBorn7, The Original Sound Souljah...He's still 7, and his band is The Sound Souljahz, This is where 7 solidified his producing game, with tools such as ProTools and sequencers, and him playing a myriad of instruments, he began building a vault of productions that were ultimately where he had been trying to get to all along-to the soul of his music-At this time he also began working with various music houses, creating tracks for commercials and film scores, which solidified his direction and with this rebirth and acute resonation he re-invented himself.
Band/artist history
The Musical Journey of a Hip-Hop Rock Star...7 Yellarey LaBlaq 7 Yellarey LaBlaq has always been a creative person, a visual artist and musician, he enjoyed performing in talent shows, but he wanted to give life to original music, original songs, contribute to the world his vision and talent, so he first formed a band in 1993 called -1stBorn7â-, which was his namesake at the time, which came about from the phrase, -I was BORN the 17th Day of 1ST month-. He wanted a name that he embodied to be unique and very -difficult to bite-and of the essence of who he was, and when he was performing as it would turn out-people ended up calling him -7-for short, and it stuck. The band 1stBorn7 was an alternative style of band that embodied the very diversity that was him. From Rock, Jazz, Reggae, and Hip-hop musicians and DJs, to gospel background vocalists and sultry blues singersâhe set out to create a music he called back then-HIP-HOP SOUL-it was more than what was known as hip-hop then, and more than what was considered soul..it was new territory, it was different..it was good music... Ahead of its time. The band itself had created about 30 song arrangements, and was giggin regularly all over New York City, The Hamptons, Amsterdam, Morrocco- After taking a meditative break, 7 reformulated his vision, and his next effort came from a regrouping of the same concept, with some of the orignal 1stBorn7 musicians and some new members, to which he called collectively as a band,-The Cloudwalkerz-, which he was inspired at the time from being the Art Director at High Times magazine, where he came across a book about the Eithiopian Coptic Zion church which showed all the references of the Blessed Sacrament in biblical scriptures and how it was all connected. One particular verse stood out to him which was from Revelations 7:11, -They walked in clouds with eyes of fire- describing the gathering of the elders in a tabernacle, to which Aaron (from the bible) had assembled-to which they all left speaking in tounge-and so the concept of The Cloudwalkerz was revealed- He also at the same time had joined another band as lead singer, and songwriter. This band was something different than what he was already doing, they were called NEED, and were more of a classic 4 piece Rock band. He enjoyed it for the fact that all of the weight of the bands existence did not weigh solely on him to survive, and it was a way for him to expand his musical expression, and develop new kinds of songs, with well trained musicians. But as much of a rock band they were, they became a âœRock Soulâ쳌 Band, with the affiliation of âœ7â쳌, and his vocal styles, which was greatâand different than what was out thereâ During this era, he performed as the frontman for the bands, The Cloudwalkerz ,at the same time, 7 worked with another band, which was originally called Shem쳌, but with the addition of 7, became BabaShem, being that most of the musicians in the band were fathersâplus the name had a better âœpopâ쳌 factor phonetically, no pun intendedâand together they created soulful ballads and hip-hop arrangements that were amazing and high spirited music..listeners loved itâthey modified exisiting songs to work with 7âs style and direction, and created a new series of songs, and gigged out, always hoping to get to the recording studio and put it down. Throughout the time with all of these bands, 7 still strived to get a certain sound he was looking for but always seemed to have to work within the confines of his musicians capabilities and personal influences, and though he did the best he could to blend and compromise, he still felt it was not exactly what he was looking forâand so he took another break from all of his musical affiliations, and meditatedâand wroteâhe picked up many instruments at this time, the flute, the guitar, bass, keys, percussions, keyboard sequencers, whatever he could get his hands onâall in the effort to create a sound that resonated with his unique style, and was definatively his. He was also blessed at this time to start developing music scores for commercials and movies, further honing his craft as a producer.
