We are and two New York based folksingers who perform both individually and together.
This SoundClick page contains only very basic information and only a small sample of our music. Please follow the links above to our artist websites for additional information. We also have our own SoundClick pages. Please click for Anne and for Steve.
We have both been performing in public since we were college students the 1960s. We met in 1997, and we first performed together three years later. From 2003 to 2008 we were both in a folk ensemble called MacDougal Street Rent Party, which dissolved after the death of our musical director, Eric Levine. But even before Eric's demise, the two of us frequently appeared without the rest of the band. It was during that time that we developed a musical workshop which features some of Woody Guthrie's less known songs. In 2008 and then again in 2010 and 2012 we went to the UK and performed at several folk clubs.
We perform live whenever and wherever we can, either separately or together. We have each performed for folk music clubs, pubs, coffee houses, schools, libraries, community centers, festivals, and other venues in the USA and abroad. Steve has performed at the Jacob's Ladder Folk Festival in Israel, and both of us have performed in folk clubs and pubs in the UK and in Ireland.
Our main influences are traditional and contemporary folk music, mostly from from North America, but also from Great Britain, Ireland, and elsewhere. We incorporate many folk styles and traditions into our music, including ballads, Appalachian music, old-time country music, blues, Gospel, Freedom songs, railroad songs, cowboy songs, union songs, topical-political songs, Woody Guthrie songs, and much more.
We are primarily acoustic performers. Both of us play Martin guitars, although Anne often sings a cappella. We each occasionally play Appalachian mountain dulcimer, and Steve sometimes plays harmonica. Once in a while he plays a Vega 5-string banjo.
We can send you a full press kit, including a sample CD containing live recordings as well as studio tracks. Please with your postal address and with the name of the venue or organization you represent. Thank you.
