Band/artist history
The Complete History of the Skatastrophes Once upon a time there were 3 kids Max Stern, John Hanna, and James Muschler. One day in 7th grade, Max said “I’m going to play guitar.” So he got a guitar and learned how. He sucked, but hey, it was a start. About this same time, John decided that he was going to play bass. They started playing music together in John’s basement, where they would play along to System of a Down songs. They actually got pretty good at it. One day, Max went to summer camp. There, he met James Muschler. Actually, Max and James had known each other since they were 7, but they didn’t really like each other then. Anyway, Max started playing his guitar one day at camp, and James said “Hey, I play drums.” So they started playing Max on acoustic guitar and James on water jugs or congas or bongos or tables or whatever he could find. When Max and James returned home, they got together with John and started playing Green Day songs. They went through a ton of names the Raging Chickens, Willingly Accused, The Accidents before deciding that they couldn’t think of any, and just decided they would think of one later. One day, Max came up with a guitar riff. John and James said they liked it. So they started to write a song. Max decided that he would play ska chords in the verses because he liked the song “Keasbey Nights” by Catch 22. So they wrote their first song. It didn’t have any words. After a little while, James and John and Max realized that the song sucked, so they stopped playing it. They started writing other songs some with words, some without, and they actually got to the point where they could get through songs without screwing up. They started to play Rancid and Anti-Flag and NoFX covers. One day, after writing their new favorite song, they decided that they wanted to get horn players because they liked ska, and thought it would be fun to play. One day in 9th grade, Max met Adam Gilbert. Adam played the saxophone. Max asked Adam if he wanted to play in a ska band. Adam said that he would give it a shot. Adam had a friend who played trumpet, so he came over too. They started writing ska songs, and before they knew it, they had accumulated the ability to play about 10 songs. They just needed a name. Max thought “Hey, ska puns are cool!” So he came up with The Skatastrophes. He didn’t know how much the name would suck later. As the end of 9th grade approached for the band (well, John was in 8th), they got an opportunity to play their first show. It was a benefit at Max’s and Adam’s school. They practiced for weeks, and played the show without a hitch. Actually, there were a lot of hitches, but people seemed to like them. Some people even danced. Some of the people who danced weren’t even intoxicated! The day after that show, they played another benefit show at Max’s old elementary school. The legacy had begun. During the summer, Sam Petrey (guitarist/singer from the Cleveland Heights ska band the Rude Staff Checkers) asked the Skatastrophes if they wanted to play a show at the Grog Shop. They said “Oh, boy!” and on July 28th, 2004, they played their first real show. The whole place was dancing! It was crazy. Tons of people came up to the band members and told them that they liked the show. One day in late summer, they got a chance to play at the Rhythm Room. They got there early and ate KFC and Swedish Fish on the stage. They didn’t play too well, but they played with national ska acts Suburban Legends and MU330, which got them some recognition. At some point in mid-October, they decided to replace their trumpet player with a trombone player named Loren Shumaker-Chupp. He had cool hair and an awesome last name. They cleaned up their songs, played more shows (including the Peabody’s battle of the bands, where they finished second out of 45 bands by 1 ticket), and had a good time. They were angered that they lost battle of the bands, but the winning band sucked, so it was ok. The winning band’s drummer’s girlfriend even told John that she cheered for them and not her boyfriend’s “crappy” band. Ska bands have all the fun. And so the story continues. The Skatastrophes are an energetic 5-piece ska/punk band who aren’t trying to change the world they’re just having a good time, and playing some awesome, fun music along the way. P.S. We’re awesome. P.P.S. We rule.
