Longboard Ranch, (LBR) began in 1998. Our sound and style is that of the original early 60s surf bands. The motivating force in starting LBR came from Doug Appleton, drummer, and Bruce Duncan, Guitarist. In mid-2000 after our original Bassist, and other Guitarist left, we replaced them with Loyd Davis, guitarist, (who was a founding member of The Surf Raiders, one of the L.A. Surf Bands responsible for the upsurge of interest in Surf Music, which led to the "Second Wave"), and Chris Ireland, bassist, (who at one time, worked with Leo Fender at G&L Guitars)
One thing we all share in common, is a love of Instrumental and Surf Music which goes back to our early childhoods. As a teenager, Loyd used to travel down to The Rendezvous Ballroom to see early Dick Dale shows. Bruce was 8 years old when he first heard "Walk Don't Run" by The Ventures, It was 1960, and the song was climbing into the Top 10. Doug's older siblings used to listen to The Ventures, The Shadows, The Lively Ones, The Chantays, etc, etc, and even as a toddler, he was continuously exposed to, and grew up loving these bands and their music. Chris's parents had a collection of music that included Martin Denny, Henry Mancini and The Ventures and his love of this music has been a lifelong thing.
We play live frequently, performing around Southern California: The Los Angeles Zoo, The Autry Museum of Western Heritage, The Huntington Beach Surf Museum, The Lava Lounge, and many other public events such as street festivals, car shows, parties, night clubs & restaurants.
The Ventures, Dick Dale,The Surfaris, The Astronauts, The Chantays, The lively Ones, The Shadows, The Sentinals, Merrill Fankhauser and The Impacts, The Nocturnes, and many more. Pretty much anything with twangy guitars!
Fender Reverb Tanks!!! Fender Stratocasters, Jazz Masters & Jaguar guitars. Fender amps (all kinds). Vintage Mosrite guitars. Vintage Rodgers, Ludwig & Slingerland drums.
Longboard Ranch is a mysterious island lost in time. A place where the reverb still resonates through the swaying palms and rippling tides of it's shores. It's place is in the hearts of those who loved the different themes in early 60s instrumental rock.
