High School Days

A song about looking back at high school featuring an autoharp for an unusual intro...
Okay, okay, so I'm just one guy. But in the studio, I'm an entire band. I play electric and 6 & 12 string acoustic guitars, mandolin, bass, keyboards, and drums plus do all the vocals and write all the music. I'm self taught and don't read music except for maybe chord charts. Well maybe not entirely self taught-mom got me started since she was a guitarist/mandolinist herself. But she played by ear too so guess that's where I got it. Not that I didn't do my time in various bands. The last, Legacy, was a full time road band until 1983 when I finally got to a space in my life where I told myself there's got to be a better way than just playing covers for a living. And then I found digital recording. Way cool...........
Band/artist history
It really seriously began in 1979 in teaming up with an old high school buddy, Mark DeFeis, and forming the acoustic duo of M.C. & DeFeis. Duos were hot then and it worked. We got to mix a lot of our own stuff with the covers we were playing. But in early 1981, we added Dave Trabue on electric lead guitar and (the late)Rex Calhoun on drums and became "Legacy". Still got to do some of our original stuff but morphed more into a variety band that adapted to whatever room we were playing. It kept us working steady but was a bummer as far as writing went. New Year's Eve 1983 was our last official show. After that, I bounced around for a few years trying to get my life together and then went back to school. It wasn't until 1993 that the creative juices began to flow steadily again. Shortly thereafter, I blew out my back and required surgery and then on the heels of that, my marriage began to disentegrate so it wasn't until 2000 that I was back at it again. And now my head is finally screwed on straight (for the most part-no promises there!). The tunes are pouring out again, the studio is well stocked, and life is good.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Been there and done that. Had some really great times on the road. In Legacy we used to do a lot of cover stuff. The funniest memory is when we used to do this AC/DC tune, I would be standing on top of my amp and would leap off on the starting downbeat. One place where we were playing I misjudged the depth of the stage and ended up leaping onto the dance floor-landing in a heap among some very surprised dancers! The good thing was I didn't smash my guitar in the process!...playing live is much harder to do now since I also have to make a living and pay the bills (ugh). My day job is with the phone company and the hope is I will eventually be in a position to quit and do music fulltime. The other hurdle is that it's a little difficult to play all the instruments and sing all the parts simultaneously-that's the beauty and the disadvantage of multitracking. My "real" job pays for my gear and studio stuff. But if the opportunity presents itself and I can put a band together then the answer would definitely be yes. Nothing beats the rush of performing for an audience. Either way it goes,it's the music that keeps me sane (or insane as it were).
Your musical influences
Musical influences...hmmm...where to start... I guess I'll just go down the list- James Taylor, Harry Chapin, Billy Joel, Chicago,Blood Sweat & Tears, CCR, Eagles, Jimmie Spheeris (maybe not real well known but still an influence), Bread, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Marc Cohn, Dan Fogelberg, Crosby,Stills,& Nash, Neil Young, Journey, Kansas, Mom and Dad, Mr. Rogers, The Three Stooges, Superman, The Lone Ranger, Santa Claus, Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, NASA,The Easter Bunny,JFK, Marilyn Monroe, Tom Hanks aka Jim Lovell, Neil Armstrong etc. etc.
What equipment do you use?
Got a '69 Gibson Les Paul Standard, a cherry red Gibson SG ,a Breedlove 12-string electric/acoustic, Washburn 6-string acoustic, an old H65 Harmony bass I got at a pawn shop (what a deal! It plays great), Epiphone EBO bass, Yamaha and Casio keyboards, Yamaha and Casio electronic drum sets,a handmade mandolin that actually belongs to Mom, a Rogue acoustic/electric mandolin, I record everything in Cakewalk, use an ART SGE Mach II and Nady effects processors, Behringer Comproser Pro compressor/limiter, Behringer DualFlex Pro multiband enhancer/exciter, DOD 15 band EQ, an Aphex Aural Exciter Type C, Dean Markley transducers, DiMarzio acoustic pickup, and AKG, CAD & MXL studio mics + three trained mice and a big ugly bear (with a real nice personality) to bring me coffee and beer when the need arises. Need I go on???
Anything else?
First released the album "In The Moment" in 2004 and now "Indigo Moon" has been released and is available at CDBaby.com who are also the distributors of all digital material on the album making it available at MusicMatch,Rhapsody,NetMusic,iTunes, and MusicNet,Rhapsody, MusicMatch,Sony Connect, and Weed to name a few. I've made the entire album available here along with "In The Moment" which includes a bluesy piece called Company Fool", a tune for one of my favorite songwriters, James Taylor, and then last-but not least-two songs written for the new Minneapolis Light Rail System in response to a call for entries of music and video. Both about good ole' Minnesota weather and Minnesota "nice".(hmmm) After you're done here, check me out at www.markcullenmusic.com for all sorts of additional tidbits. Check it out and drop me a line. That would really rock!
