FL STUDIO 10 HAS BEEN LAUNCHED! http://www.image-line.com/documents/news.php?entry_id=1301017795&title=fl-studio-10 I'm a DIY songwriter/musician. Played bass guitar in a couple of bands in high school in Alberta, Canada - we did some dances and parties and famously produced the most electrifying version of 'It's my party and I'll cry if I want to' in history. I'd always been more into writing songs than performing - trying to record stuff on casette recorders from the age of 13. (Bouncing tracks between two recorders until the hiss was mortifying.) After graduating and a couple years in Japan I started doing stuff on 4 and 8 tracks, mostly guitar based and trying to play live drumming on a primitive Kawai keyboard. I eventually got into sequencing my songs on Korgs and using a friend's professional recording kit to lay down vocals and bits of guitar, plus mix and master with the benefit of a great big fat mixing desk and compressors, noisgates etc. I could never find the vocalist I wanted so started singing my own tunes, overvoicing myself and doing my own background singing. I'm just now getting back into making music after a long time being more absorbed with writing fiction. Learning how to use FL Studio just now and planning to upload new stuff soon - less 80s and with a much bigger, cleaner, updated sound. I like Erasure, Depeche Mode, REM, Sinead O Connor, Barenaked Ladies and two Scottish bands you may not have heard of - Goodbye Mr Mackenzie and Horse.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
No, not for ages. I used to sing harmonies in the bands I played in but one night playing at a party the hostess threw a hissy fit and we started an impromptu version of 'It's my party and I'll cry if I want to'....my vocals and hamming it up passed into legend....
Your musical influences
I like such an eclectic range of music. My tunes probably reflect a bit of everything. Though I definitely am into songwriting, vocal layers and pay attention to lyrics.
What equipment do you use?
Korg 01/W and Trinity, a cheap old acoustic guitar, Cubase, Yamaha string boxes, a bit of Roland bass, Shure mics (double voice recording), 1/2 inch reel to reel tape - tape still sounds nice for warmth, compressor and noisegate
