Surf Rock

I believe I've finally discovered what my sound is after about 12 or so years of writing songs and I'm really enjoying personal musical breakthroughs at the moment. having recently discovered the harmonica to use at my solo / acoustic gigs, I have a new respect for 'folky' artists like Paul Kelly and going back to my roots and writing songs influenced by old retro bands like 'Daddy Cool' of Australia, early 70's Elton John, the Who, even the early Ray Charles bluesy/Gospel stuff I hink is Rad. However at the same time I'm enjoying contemporary influences like the black keys, radio head, Coldplay and other modern bands So, I'm just trying to capture my creativity on multi-track recordings at the moment and trying to perform as much as I can. Hopefully I'll be able to save up and record a studio album asap. peace.
Band/artist history
Marcus Hayden, based in Geelong, Victoria. After growing up in a family deeply embedded in popular music of the 70's and 80's, my musical influences more recently have been, Cat Stevens, Alex Lloyd, Powderfinger and Ben Harper. From 1992-94 I started out playing lead guitar, background vocals and some lead vocals in 'Wyes Guys': 11 piece showband who dressed up as the Blues Brothers performing Soul, Blues and Popular Music in Hotels and functions mainly in Geelong. After that time I helped to form a pub rock band called 'Dr. Strange' that played covers around my home town, I was about 19y.o. and enjoyed playing guitar but didn't much like the pub curcuit. Therefore, from about 1995 to 2002 I sang back ground vocals and played guitar with 'Sons Of Korah': 3-4 Piece folk/pop acoustic band. Together, we played all over Victoria appearing in some larger venues such as Melbourne Exhibition Centre, Centreway Baptist Church Auditorium, Ford Blackiston Theatre GPAC. Black Stump Music Festival, Appin NSW. Forest Edge Music Festival, Neerim VIC. Their easy listening acoustic recordings have quite a following across Australia and New Zealand. 'Light of Life' 1999, 'Redemption Songs' 2000. Over the last 3 years I've been concentrating on my own material, experimenting with home recording and performing covers also at various venues; such as- The Tannin Lounge, Rock O'cashel Lane, Geelong. Pascovale Taverner Hotel, Pascovale. Cats Bar & Resaurant, Little Malop Street, Geelong. Gianni's Cafe Bar, Pakington Street, Geelong West. Wharf Shed Cafe, Eastern Beach Road, Geelong. The Surf Rider Cafe, Bell Street, Torquay. Get my mp3's at: www.mdhayden.com
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I'm currently playing cover gigs at cafes etc. and chucking in some of my original stuff. I'd like to be playing totally original performances one day. I'd also like to get a good bass player and percussionist on stage with me soon, so far, I havn't found the right people. a highlight at the last gig I played the song 'stand by me' at the end of the night so everyone could sing along and this real character of a bloke got up with his girlfriend and started doing the walz type dancing, that was cool. also other highlights recently have been busking and one woman gave me a $20 note that made my day! I really enjoy getting my demo cds out to people as I like the idea of people being able to listen in their own time and I enjoy getting nice emails from people who dig your stuff. these are some places I've played over about the past year: Tannin Lounge-Geelong, Wharfshed Cafe, Cats Bar Geelong, Pascovale Taverner Hotel. Your musical influences
Good male vocalists particularly have influenced me: like- Cat Stevens, Ben Harper, Powderfinger, Ray Charles, I like to listen to lots of different music and pick bits out that I like and let that influence my music. I'm listening to stuff like Radiohead, Jack Johnson, the black keys, eliot smith?, smog, coldplay etc. Early influences, vocally have been singers like John Stevens from Noiseworks, Bruce Springsteen, Don McLean, Jim Croche, maybe a bit of Meatloaf! (this is all my MUM's doing!) plus in my younger guitaring days I was really into Joe satriani, Jeff Healey, Gary Moore, Kirk Hammet, all the guitar Heros! but I like how music seems to be a lot more experimental in general these days.
What equipment do you use?
I used to have a nice maton guitar and hopefully one day I'll have a nice guitar again. But I can't complain because I like the guitars I have.. I scored my slim, semi acoustic 'washburn' for $250 au in a 2nd hand shop. but I had to spend $100 or so fixing it up a bit. I really liked the way it felt, I think that's the most important thing. (it felt better than my $1,450 guitar) I've got a nice satch s-series Ibanez e-guitar that I only use for recording really and I've got this zoom ps02 that I use for my guitar effects. I'm running cakewalk home studio 2004 which I think is the BEST! and I use a soundblaster live to get soundfonts which are also very cool and cheap (because I'm a muso with no money)
Anything else?
be good to your Mother. Peace!
