Death/Black Metal

Algol was formed in February of 1998 by Dalkiel and Sarnath. Algol plays Dark Vinlandic Art!

Band/artist history

Algol was created in the winter of 1998, by 16 year old Dalkiel (vocals,

guitar, keys, songwriter) and 19 year old Sarnath (bass), in hopes of

bringing a newer style of "black metal" into an already existing American

scene. Algol's first demo "Forgotten Paths" put their name out there,

enabling them to share the stage with such bands as Garden of Shadows,

Black Mass, Pessimist, In Flames, and Moonspell. Their demo also gave them

the opportunity to release their first album "Gorgonus Aura" on the small

Italian label 12th Planet Records. Although the band is disappointed with

certain aspects of that release, they received an abundant amount of good

press. Algol received many rave reviews from such magazines as Ill

Literature (USA), INFERNO mag (fin), Grind Zone (Italy), Heavymetalonline

(Norway), and many others. With the release of "Gorgonus Aura", this

allowed Algol to concentrate solely on playing live and getting their name

out to a wider audience. Unfortunately Algol was plagued by severe line-up

changes and thus forced them to cease playing live for the time being.

During this hiatus, Dalkiel and Sarnath grew increasingly disenchanted with

the back-stabbing and name dropping of the American Black Metal scene.

This allowed Dalkiel and Sarnath time to discuss what they wanted for the

band and for themselves. Ultimately, this led them to the decision of

dropping the term black metal from their music and incorporating the more

appropriate term "Dark Vinlandic Art". This allowed them the opportunity

to add more of their non-metal influences (i.e. Sigur Ros, Sopor Aeternus,

Slowdive, HIM, Ulver, etc...) to their music without being pigeonholed by

the shallow thinking, herd mentality often associated with the

self-proclaimed black metal elitists. The greatest addition to the band

came a few weeks later in drummer MBOC from ,Maryland based and Wicked

World signee, Garden of Shadows. Algol was officially back! They played

out for a good year and a half, while working hard on recording the

material for there anticipated split with Shroud of Despondency entitled

"Whispers From and Empty Room" and also the beginnings of their new album

"Vinlandic Evocations of an Anti-Christ". The music to the upcoming album

"Vinlandic......" is 100% finished and around 60% recorded. The band has

spent all of it's own money in the recording process totalling over $6,000

and they have taken their time in the recording studio ensuring the best

sound quality they possibly can. This now brings us into 2004, where the

band has solidified it's line-up with keyboardist Cthulu, new guitarist Mortanius and taking the place of their drummer MBOC is 19 year old drum prodigy Xos. The band is

now focused and ready to dedicate all their time to taking Algol to the

next level. With the right backing and the right promotion there is no

doubt that Algol will become the biggest band to come out of the

underground American black metal scene.
