Band/artist history
When I hear music I fear no danger, I am invulnerable, I see no foe. I am related to the earliest times and the latest. Although Henry David Thoreau originally said that, the young Omaha band Never A Dull Moment takes credit for those words; after all, they live by this philosophy every day of their lives. The members of NADM, consisting of Josh, Jim, Brandon, Tom and Keith, are all still in highschool, and are extraordinarily talented for being so young. They play emo music with a kicky, poppunk twist, and they are not afraid to take liberties with this genre. If one listens closely, subtle hints of dreamy indie music and explosive, emotional hard rock can be detected. When it comes down to it, Never A Dull Moment are willing to explore and eventually break through the sonic barriers of emotional poppunk music. Never A Dull Moment have been together since late February 2003. During that time they have worked extremely hard to develop a sound that is uniquely their own. They have had a few line-up changes and gotten much tighter as a band since the last bio. To get an idea of their sound, take a look at the bands they love: The Get Up Kids, The Ataris, Rufio, Blink 182, Audio Karate, Yellow Card, The Early November, At the Drive-In, Staring Back, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, Finch, Brand New, The Mars Volta, Matchbook Romance and The Used. However, you probably couldnt notice any of these bands influence: their songs have a flair that screams NEVER A DULL MOMENT! Indeed, NADM has concocted an original style for your listening pleasure. The story of Never A Dull Moment traces back over 4 years ago. At that time, the band members were unaware of each others existence. However, they were aware of one thing: music was the only thing that mattered. Ever since they were little kids, these teenage romantics have been wishing on a star, dreaming of fame, fortune and good music. Over the past couple of years however, desires of fame and fortune slowly faded away. The music was now all that mattered. Now let us get to the good part. In February 2003 Never A Dull Moment formed out of the ashes of various local bands, including the Fast Women and the Get Lucky Special. Okay, so no one knows who the hell those bands were, so what? They were good for their time and place no matter what anyone says. Anyways, this first incarnation included Albert Billman as guitarist/singer, Tom McCauley on guitar, Jim Hubbard on bass, and that insanely talented drummer Keith Goodman on accordion-er, drums. After a lot of practice, persistence, inspiration, sweat, blood, tears, boredom, laughter and King of the Hill episodes, the band was ready to be seen. They secured a basement show on April 5th with such underground luminaries as Gnome Slaughterhouse and Tricycle Head. The played to a crowd of 100 or more perspiring youngsters. Swear to God man, it was packed in like sardines. With a comforting median temperature of 120 degrees. But they played their hearts out, and what resulted was a wild explosion of music, dance, first-show jitters and broken ceilings. Never A Dull Moment exited into the night to the tune of 100 screaming teens. Then they came right back in because it was 37 degrees outside. Now were getting somewhere. Sort of. The following week saw their second gig. This time it was a talent show at St. Leos Church on 102nd and Blondo. Although they were up against such bands as Point Blanc, The Good 4 Nothings and Her Last Goodbye, Never A Dull Moment took first place and $25. (Even though they probably didnt deserve it. Sorry you Good 4 Nothings!) But heres a brief rundown of the show: They were nervous as hell; Albert had no lyrics to sing; Toms guitar came unplugged during the last song, which, at that time, was their best song. That song was âœWithout You and is no longer part of the bands repertoire. Damn. Oh well. And here is the part where nothing happens for awhile. You might compare this period of time in NADMs history to the middle of an action movie: theres too much dialogue, too little action, and the plot doesnt seem to make a lot of sense. Following the April 12th battle of the bands, a lot of changes took place. First of all Brandon Scott, formerly of the Fast Women and an old friend of Albert, joined the band on guitar. Albert switched to lead vocals. The band wrote a couple new songs and booked a show for May 18th at the 49r. It was a birthday party for Brad, a.k.a. Kyle, and it wasnt really their crowd. The average age of the spectators was about 71. I think this one lady was actually well into the second century of her existence. So, uh, things didnt go over to well, Albert lost his mic and the band screwed up a lot. But at least there was some Blimpies cuisine, which is more valuable than gold. It was an interesting experience. Maybe even educational. No, just interesting. On May 22nd or so, the band went into the Nevada Room to record a 6 or 7 song EP. So far that remains up in the air. They worked on it sporadically throughout the summer, but it just needs a little more time. Hopefully it will be done in a couple of moths. Did I say moths? Because I meant months. But I digress; the important thing is that the band should have a two song E.P. for sale by early September. Have you done your back to school shopping yet? You might want to reserve a copy of this soon-to-be collectors item. Ok lets jump back to May 30th, an important date in world history. On May 30th, Never A Dull Moment rocked the socks off of about 150 kids in Keith Goodmans basement. They played with their brothers in Gnome Slaughterhouse, the now-defunct Three Weeks (very sad business, I know) and the always exciting Christ Punchers (formerly known as Tricycle Head). Following the May 30th show, a decision was made to switch Brandon and Alberts band roles. Brandon became the lead singer, and Albert became the guitar player. In the summer of 2003, the band played a handful of shows at Rebels in Council Bluffs and an especially memorable show with the Cover Story at The Rock in Papillon. Sadly that was also the Good For Nothings last show. Nadm was later seen crying about GFNs break-up. They just seemed like such a good and happy group... Possibly the most exciting show of the summer was the July 19th backyard show at Jim Hubbards house. After the two seminal local bands, Amarthatic and Crystal Palace, Never A Dull Moment did what they do best...THEY ROCKED! Even though it was mind-numbingly hot that day, the band still managed to put on a high-energy, action-packed, super-duper performance...of the highest caliber. There was even a dance-off, a tradition which will surely be continued in the future. Now comes the tragic part of the Never A Dull Moment story. Following the July 19th show, Albert quit the band for reasons unknown. This is where Josh comes in. Josh Koterba, lead singer for the Castoffs and guitarist extrodinaire, joined the band shortly after Albert quit. He was the missing link the band had been in search of for ages now. A very talented guitar player with an easy-going attitude, Josh was just what the doctor ordered. With everyone happy now, the band carried on. Enter: Never A Dull Moment, Version 2 point something. Ladies and Gentlemen, Never A Dull Moment will soon be playing a show near you. As usual, we will bring their explosive blend of emo, punk and polka (polka?) to the stage. Heads will be banged, bodies will be rocked, Brandon will sing and do that cool head-shaking thing he does, Jim will bust out some bass, Keith will bang on his bongo drums, Josh will thrash around with his axe, and Tom, of course, will dance like he has not danced before. I mean, not like hes never danced, but like he hasnt danced in awhile so this time hes gonna really get into it and...God, okay, hes just gonna dance alright? Geez, dont make this more complicated then it is. Im not! Youre the one whos being complicated! What?!!! Why did you type that?!!! I didnt, you did! I thought we were the same person! Well you are sorely mistaken then...Thats it youre going in the closet again, mister. Whoa. Ok, sorry for that brief lapse into schizophrenia.
