MetroTang, led by composer/percussionist Chacho Ramirez, brings a unique angle to jazz. Combining African drumming rhythms with funky bass lines and long flowing melodies, the music uses standard jazz forms. Some tunes sound more Latin than African, others keep the blues in mind. If you’re steeped in jazz, you’ll hear new twists to familiar tunes, and if you’re not, you’ll have a fun time listening to some lively songs.
Metro Tang, a quintet that performs in the New York metropolitan area, and of which Chacho is the musical director, composer, and drummer, recently released their first cd Lights Out .
