Scott Sanford - Who Am I - Dave Gibson Vocalist

scott sanford is a nashville wanna-be born in louisiana, yet too far away from the gulf of mexico to be considered a true cajun. scott began playing music at 4 years old, showing interest in the piano at bay springs baptist church, located ironically in chopin, louisiana. his mother, beverly, helped to encourage his musical ability and bought him his own upright piano on easter sunday, 1981. It also didn't hurt that his father was a piano salesman. Scott didn't pick up a guitar until he was 14 years old, but soon showed everyone that the piano was just a stepping stone.
Band/artist history
scott has always had a vision to see how songs could be interpreted if left only to the listener to decide. what began as "acoustix", a collection of acoustic guitar songs for an album fit to play during one's dreamlife, has now evolved into a moving wide awake exploration for scott. since his triumphant move to nashville (according to his louisiana native family), he has shared venues with up and coming acts like CJ Watson, Erick Sims, The Animators, Ashby Blair, Lisa Shaffer, and Camille Wallin. in 2002 scott set up camp in nashville and began playing in venues there several times weekly, including the world famous Bluebird Cafe. (check local listings) he is constantly playing his music this summer and is moving to make the album scott once only dreamed of making. the following is an excerpt of an interview i never had with scott earlier this year. it is July 2004. he is excited, optimistic, and encouragably humble. What inspires scott sanford? "Love. I don't mean the artful type of love, the type you see in 'Sleepless In Seattle', 'While You Were Sleeping', or 'Throw Mama From the Train'... just kidding about the last one... I'm talking about those two old people who always hold hands and walk along the beach every morning just to be together. Those people who have been together long enough to know that 'love' and being 'in love' are two separate things. Love is what's left over after being in love has faded." “I respect those kinds of relationships because it gives me hope. It shows me that maybe someday I'll find my perfect other. And I hope we have a lot of sex.” Okay, gross. What about musical inspirations? “I grew up in the 80's, so of course there are a lot of those influences on my music. I especially like Billy Joel, Tom Petty, and Aerosmith. I also like any group that focuses a lot of really tight harmonies. They make the song so much better. Smoother.” “In the way of words, I am drawn to the country market, strangely enough. I find that what is lacking in the pop world is the depth you find in the lyrics of the great writers like Craig Wiseman, Jeff Steele, Anthony Smith, and Chris Wallin. I suppose it's okay with the kids who listen to it... those who like to hear 'yeah baby, yeah baby' over and over again, but what's lacking in the pop and adult contemporary markets is strong, mature lyrics. I want to be able to bring that into the mainstream. Jewel and Norah Jones shouldn't have the monopoly on that.” “Growing up I listened to all kinds of music beginning with old rock. Kansas, Credence Clearwater Revival, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, and even so far back as Jim Croce and Don McLean. I’ll admit I learned to dance to the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack, and I followed my performances using songs from the artist formerly loved as Michael Jackson, as well as many other disco songs (which I'm totally embarrassed to admit) and other 80’s dance-ables.” Is that how you first got into writing music? “Not really. When I was in 8th grade, I would ride my bike over to my best friend's house every Friday and we would stay up all night using anything and everything making music. For drums we used pots, pans, Tupperware, even kitchen cabinets, and we had to make due with a Cascio-Tone keyboard with the worst sounds on it... but it was a small price to pay to make the music we wanted to make. And you know what? It wasn't that bad... not that we were ready to take it on tour or anything.” A first concert can make such an impact on one’s life. What was your first concert experience? “Actually, I've never actually been to a REAL concert. Not where you go to a huge arena and are crammed in with ten thousand screaming fans. The closest I've come is being in a live studio audience where they were taping a show with Lyle Lovett. And that was just this past year.” And you're HOW old?!? “Yeah, I know... I just never lived in a big enough town that would warrant a big act to visit. So I never ended up going. Actually, you know what? I went with some of my friends to a Christian concert to see Carmen. The show was okay, but he was just singing to background tracks. There wasn't even a band. What a ripoff.” Moving on Are you a morning person? “What's morning? Actually, I usually get to sleep around 2 or 3 in the morning and wake up between 9:30 and 10:30. If I only get four or five hours of sleep, I'm ruined for the whole day. I have no energy. So if you're ever bunking with me, don't you dare wake me up or you'll catch hell! Besides, I like to sleep. It helps me dream, and in those dreams I'm given inspiration for lots of my songs.” How so? "Like this one recurring dream I've had since I was 16. I'm in this cloud filled room with this ambient lighting and mood music, when out of the mist a beautiful girl comes and stands in front of me. She is smiling and she takes my hand and we start to dance. She has never spoken, but I know that this is the most perfect woman in the world. I'd know her anywhere. I hate waking up from that dream. I'm in such a peaceful place with that woman who loves me despite all my faults and I just want to stay there forever. She has been the inspiration to many of my love songs." What's her name? "I'm not sure. It changes sometimes. I think her name is Lisa, but she sometimes comes to me as Emily." Weird. So you’re no stranger to the snooze alarm then? "I don't own an alarm clock. My internal clock seems to work pretty good. If I have to be awake at 8:13 AM, my eyes usually open at 8:12. Don't ask me how that works. I don't know... but I'm grateful! Besides, dreams are much more fun than real life. I mean, where else can you fly?" Are you into finding what's symbolic of your dreams? “Okay, get this... Last night I dreamt that I was with this beautiful young girl... ” I can see where this is going... "No, it's not what you think. At least not this time... Anyway, I must have met her through her parents... I'd say she was 18 or 19 years old. And she was really strange. So I was driving around, and I saw her folks and they flagged me down and told me that I needed to get back to her house because something was wrong. When I got there, I discovered that she had taken some sort of knife and cut both of her feet off. She had bandaged the nubs up and was walking around on them. If you have any idea what that is symbolic of, let me know, because that's pretty freaky. Maybe it means that I need to make sure my next girlfriend isn't a weird chick armed with a butcher knife and an urge to be foot-less and fancy free!" Okay, remind me never to ask you about your dreams again. But now that you've opened that door, we might as well step through it. Any women in your life? "Are you kidding? I've got women dancing with me in cloud filled rooms, cutting their feet off just because they want my attention..." No, I meant in real life. "Oh. Sadly, no." So what's next for the comedic love activist Scott Sanford? “Well, I'm getting ready to go back into the studio and record my new album, which, I think.will be titled 'I Got The Groove'. We're set to begin recording sometime next month. In the meantime, I'm just playing out at as many places as possible, getting my name out there, and still hoping to land that elusive record deal. That may take a week or two, though.” One more question. If this were a perfect world. Where would you be and what would you be doing? “I’ve had this one before. You know, I've had some really rough times earlier in my life. There were times when I thought that I really was living in hell. And I don't mean that as a metaphor. For me, life really used to suck. But then I got my act together and moved to Nashville. Ever since I've done that, life has been great. I've made some fantastic friends, I've become more tuned in to myself, and I've started to realize what makes me happy. So even if this was a perfect world, I think I'd still be right here, doing exactly what I'm doing. Music isn't what I do. It's who I am. And though it may be slow going, reaching for my dreams is the best feeling in the world. I totally recommend it. Everyone has dreams. Some of them are sleeping in while I'm up at 8:45 in the morning doing these interview segments.” Speaking of these segments, if anyone asks, you never saw me, and this interview never happened. “What interview?” Good boy.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I live in Nashville, so I make all the writers rounds. I usually frequent Hobo Joe's, The French Quarter Cafe, the Commodore Bar and Grill, and of course, the world famous Bluebird Cafe.
