mid-1990s stuff in particular...
(Note: my music is vastly different from those guys, I'm a copycat, yes, but some people would angrily disagree.)
What equipment do you use?
My laptop and a slew of VSTi's. I used to depend a lot on a cheap MIDI keyboard for sounds and sequencing.
