Band/artist history
The Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club (ACGC) is the oldest university chorale in the Philippines. It was organized in 1921 primarily to provide liturgical music at the San Ignacio Church in Manila. The choir has since expanded both in repertoire and membership, having become a mixed choir since the university became co-educational. Led by its able conductors, the group has enjoyed consistent success, pioneering many firsts as both a student organization in the Philippines and as a Filipino choir. The group took home top prize in many of the local competitions it has participated in, including the National Music Competitions for Young Artists, and has, in addition, received international acclaim on its tours of Europe, Asia, and North America.
The ACGC swept through Europe at the turn of the millenium, and under longtime conductor Joel Navarro, and guest conductor Jonathan Velasco, two of the country's leading conductors, the ACGC won top prizes in the competitions in Maribor, Slovenia (2000); Riva del Garda, Italy (2000); Cork, Ireland (2000); Tolosa, Spain (2000); and Marktoberdorf, Germany (2001). The victory at Tolosa in particular qualified the choir to participate in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing at Debrecen, Hungary in 2001.
The baton has since been passed on to Professor Maria Lourdes Hermo, the ACGC's first lady conductor. The ACGC choristers have grown steadily under her formation, and were warmly received on their United States tour in 2004.
In 2006, the ACGC's 85th year, the group had a successful European Concert-Competition Tour. They garnered the First Prize and Gold Diploma for the Symphony of Voices (Choir composition) Category; First Prize, Public Prize; and the Bavarian Lion for Best Interpretation of the Compulsory Piece, which were the top three prizes in the 6th International Choral Competition in Miltenberg, Germany. Along with this, the ACGC was awarded the Second Prize in the Polyphony Category, Special Prize in the Romanticism Category and the Public Prize in the Choral Festival for International Folksong, in the 54th International Choral Competition in Arezzo, Italy.
Today, the current batch of the ACGC strives to continue building on the group's history with great pride and excitement as cultural ambassadors of our country.
