Art Priebe: I am a singer/songwriter from northern Nevada; my creed is that making quality music is more important than catering to any current musical fad. My music is a mix of traditional country, folk and bluegrass with some gospel thrown in. "The EndOrphans" is really a phantom band produced by the multi-tracking done by me, since I play all the instruments.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Not much to tell there; as I mentioned, there really is no band, just me; I've been writing songs since I was 17, but the best ones lately; I don't have extensive experience playing in public, and I wonder why that seems to be such an important criteria in some places. I am primarily a songwriter; songs aren't written on the stage. The audiences I have had in clubs, at festivals and at weddings etc., do seem to like my performances.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I used to more when I lived in L. A., where I was born and grew up. Clubs mostly. Nowadays I play at the occassional regional bluegrass festival. I do enjoy it, but still suffer from stage fright and the inability to always remember my own or others' lyrics! Mostly I am seeking to get others who are more used to the spotlight to record the songs I write. My favorite special moments are at small informal gatherings with friends, like around a campfire in the mountains late at night, just them and me and my guitar, great old songs and a bottle of wine....times like that.
Your musical influences
My main, number one, primary influence the last few years, has been Alison Krauss, my favorite artist, because of her superb choice of beautiful music which she records, music that touches the heart; she hasn't made the money she could by being more "commercial", but I deeply respect her musical ethics. Also Rhonda Vincent, Merle Haggard, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Ricky Skaggs, Dolly, Reba, and the Eagles now that they are older and more introspective.
What equipment do you use?
For recording, I combine the use of a Tascam multi-track tape recorder, and Cool Edit Pro software on my computer, with Shure microphones, an Alesis SR-16 drum machine and a PreSonus tube preamp. Beyond that everything is pretty lowtech.
Anything else?
As a boy I was trained in classical violin, then as a teen branched off into guitar, inspired by Merle, George, Tanya, Tammy, Loretta and Dolly. Over the years I've learned to play bass,12-string guitar, mandolin, a little banjo, dobro, keyboard and harmonica; it just comes naturally.
