2007, outside a bar, one bassist and drummer were talking about forming a band.
Late 2008, Irukandji was born with a complete line-up. Carolyn Angelo on vocals, Dan Mindru on guitar and backing vocals, Ben Rand on rhythm guitar, Steve Phipps on bass and Sam Reece on drums.
If you had to categorise their style, it would fall into a 'progressive heavy rock meets classic metal' type theme. It's not easy labelling their sound as it has so much going on. Where one track celebrates classic metal mixed with progressive grandeur, another will groove its way into the heavy rock arena. Their influences are many, including Opeth, Dream Theatre, Nevermore, Tool and Gojira, to name a few. None of which they really sound like, but it can give you an idea of where they're coming from!
In February 2009 they completed their first demo CD, completely self-produced. Their bass player Steve is also a talented producer, so took it upon himself to record and mix the CD, and this was all within 2 months of them being a complete band! They have dedication and then some.
The CD is called 'Stages Of Delirium', a title created by vocalist and lyricist Carloyn. She has an extraordinary voice and a gift with writing, that is emphasised by the solid lead work and rhythm section given by the rest of the band. The 4 songs on the CD are the first to be finished at the time, and there are plenty of other tracks already being written.
