Mosaic was a really cool band that existed in the late '80's and early '90's in the Tampa Bay, Florida area. We were very fortunate, in that we worked solidly for the entire time we were together and made a really decent living for us and our families. And, we made some damn good music too...
Band/artist history
Mosaic was formed in the Fall of 1989 (I think) in an attempt to escape from a house gig at a prominent country bar in Tampa, where the owner was an oppressive ogre. We rehearsed by day, and played our house gig at night until we were ready and had booked some work as the new group.
We packed up and walked away from the country gig one evening (supposedly to play a wedding the next day) and never returned. The ogre had to find other pawns to manipulate, and he did.
The original lineup was as follows:
Joey Arata
--Guitars, Keyboards, Vocals, Drum Programming
Steve Hornbeak
--Keyboards, Saxophone, Vocals
Susie Hulcher (Jennings)
--Bass, Keyboards, Vocals
Rex Fever
--Yamaha RX-5 Electronic Drummer
We played together in this form for...I guess...about 2-3 years before Steve got the opportunity to hit the road with Lee Greenwood's band, then we replaced Steve with...
Howard Helm
--Keyboards, Vocals, Drum Programming
Howard had just come off the road with the Ian Hunter-Mick Ronson Band (of Mott the Hoople and David Bowie fame) and lasted with us onlya a few months. He just wasn't cut out to be a 'lounge lizard' and went on to other things. Next, came...
Tim Jacobsmeyer
--Keyboards, Vocals
Tim was with us for the duration of the band...I guess about a year-and-a-half.
And then we were gone...
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Haven't played live together since around 1992...don't know that it'll ever happen again.
Your musical influences
Just about anything and everything...during the course of the band, we played everything from Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris and Hank Williams, Jr. cover tunes to songs from Miami Sound Machine, Steely Dan, Yes, Zeppelin, the Stones, and on and on and on. Since we played mostly for the 25-50 crowd, we had to play a variety and...luckily...we could pull off just about any style convincingly. One thing that helped us do this was the fact that we used very tediously programmed electronic percussion. We took care that every tune was as close to the original as humanly possible and this was one of the keys to our musical diversity and success.
What equipment do you use?
Back in the day...Roland, Yamaha, Korg & Kawai keyboards, Yamaha rhythm programmer, Yamaha guitars & basses, Roland & Gallien-Krueger amps, Peavey PA.
