"Drum & bass?", you ask. You're thinking "this man ain't 'down'... the streetz ain't gon feel him". I'll say this: drum & bass (and any other electronic music) gives me indispensible experience and practicing with synthesizing, EQ, beat slicing, and sampling. Truth be told, I'm a bass freak and I like to play with nasty synth'd noizes in my beats.
With hip-hop, I focus on the lyrics; if the words don't catch you, the music never will.
I've done some live performances with boyz (and girlz) from college--The Startin' Lineup.
Performing live is unbeatable, esp. if you get the crowd feeling your songs.
Eminem, KRS-1, Twista, Dr. Dre, Nas, RZA, Timbaland, Talib Kweli, MF Doom, RJD2.. the list goes on & on. If they can flow, then I try to flow better. If they make hot beats, I try to make mine hotter. That doesn't necessarily guarantee that I sound like anyone in particular..
