My 'band' is comprised mostly of myself, and husband Terry, however, we do play with other people at the West Edmonton Music Society as well. The members of 'Urban Bunny' (Bruce Brososky, Steve Lemiski, Laurent Arams, Terry Taylor) change their name to 'Kitty and the Cool Cats' when I join them on stage.
I have been singing since I learned how to talk ! My family is very musical, and I still have very fond memories of long car rides coupled with family sing-alongs. In Grade 6, I learned how to play the baritone Ukulele, which led to learning to play the Acoustic Guitar. Being the 4th child in my family, I needed a lot of attention, and found that my singing and guitar playing helped to acheive that ! The first actual 'band' I played with was called "Mountain Ash", a local band that mostly did wedding dances, but we also played a lot of 'old Hotel' bars in Edmonton all the way to St. Paul.
The 2nd band I played in was called 'The Jump', a rock band that did all cover tunes. We travelled around Alberta in a beat-up old school bus, and it seemed our 'agent' was always booking us into inappropriate places....long story ! The best thing about playing in that band was the lead guitarist, Graeme Calder, who in my opinion, is the best lead guitarist in Alberta ! I met my husband, Terry, while I was still performing in 'The Jump', and shortly after we met, I quit the band, moved in with him, got married, had 3 kids, all the while persuing music with him. Terry and I really 'click' musically......his bass and guitar playing was what attracted to me to him ! For the 'child-raising years', we did very few public performances, until 1992 when we joined his good friend, Mike Burchak's band, 'The Ditch Pigs'. The Ditch Pigs had quite a following in Central Alberta, even tho we played only once or twice a year at hall parties....it was quite an experience ! Alas, The Ditch Pigs disbanded in 1996, and Terry and I were left to our own devices. For a brief time, we played in a church band, but that too, fell by the wayside. Since that time, Terry decided to record songs that he had written. In the last 8 years, we have recorded 5 original CDs, with more to follow. In 2004, we joined The West Edmonton Music Society, which is where we mostly go now to satisfy our need to perform. They are a great bunch of people, and we always get a great response to our music. Also, in the past 3 years I have had the pleasure of singing and playing with our good friends, Dave and Brenda Briggs. They come over at least once a month to our studio to 'jam'. Brenda and I sound really good together vocally, if I may be a little vain about it ! We have what Terry calls 'sibling' harmony, and we aren't even related ! Brenda's voice appears in a few of my Soundclick tracks.
Yes, sometimes. I mostly play at the West Edmonton Music Society. I have also sung at numerous Weddings and Funerals. I love to perform in front of an audience ! My greatest 'Claim To Fame' was singing on stage at Rexall Place in Edmonton with 'The Scorpions'. I won a karaoke contest and the grand prize was backstage passes and a chance to sing back-up on their song 'Wild Child' .......THAT was pretty special, singing in front of a live audience of 10,000+ people ! Another special time was being asked on stage to sing by my first cousin, Danny Hooper, who is a popular C&W singer/performer in Alberta, and has recorded in Nashville as well. We met our good friends and fellow musicians, Dave and Brenda Briggs, at a Danny Hooper show after I sang with his band. We exchanged phone numbers, and have been playing music together ever since.
Patsy Cline, Stringband, Cold Blood, Paul Simon, Harry Nilsson, Nancy Griffith, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, Enya, Sarah Maclauglin, Enigma, Deep Forest, Harry Chapin, John Denver, Queen, Pink Floyd, Annie Lennox, Melissa Ethridge, Shania Twain, The Beatles, Jorma Kaukonen, Junior Brown, Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benatar, Fleetwood Mac, Darby Devon, Sara Brightman.....the list is endless !!!!
My instruments are a Hilo Baritone Ukulele, Takamine Acoustic/Electric Guitar, and for novelty purposes, a Hello Kitty Fender Stratocaster. Terry bought me a Bodhran for X-mas a few years ago, which I have yet to learn how to play.
I have great hopes that my 1 year old grandson will be Terry's and my 'musical protege' when he is a little older. He loves to hear us play and sing, and already bashes away at Terry's pianos, and likes to strum guitars. He has been grooving to music since he was a couple of months old.....he is fun to watch !
Just to let you know, if you contact me and don't get a reply for a while, it is because I may be a little busy with my full-time Grandma duties.....don't worry, I'll get back to you when I can !
