Band/artist history
Michael (Mike) John Garvey is a 30 year old guitarist and composer from a small town near Liverpool called Warrington. A brief history.... In 1994 Mike found himself travelling between Warrington and Blackburn, the town he'd just left. This was a particularly hard time for Mike as his parents had split up and he'd moved to a new and strange town. He got heavily into the music of Pink Floyd after hearing 'The Wall' and immediately went out and bought most of their albums including 'Dark Side Of The Moon' and 'The Division Bell', released that year. Something about the music, in particular the majestic guitar playing of David Gilmour gestated gently in his subconscious. Whilst staying at his fathers in Blackburn he happened to walk past a small music shop. In the window was a gleaming electric guitar.... At that exact moment Mike knew he wanted a guitar.... To be a guitar player!!! He managed to get a Fender Squire Stratocaster for Christmas, though sadly he didn't have the guitar in his possesion for too long.... "Didn't know how to string it, had no amp, didn't know how to play the f*cker!". For a year or so Mike forgot about guitar playing, believing that he wasn't cut out for it.... He simply wasn't musical. However he was cought by the bug and from the age of 19 onwards had owned a succession of cheap guitars on which he gradualy learned his first chords and basic blues licks. The year 2000 would be a pivotal year for Mike. He was now aged 22 and had been playing for a couple of years or so. A new music course - the Access To Music Foundation Course - started at Warrington College. He immediately joined and quickly set up his first band 'Chapter 24' with new friends Mike Hadland and Ian Bennett amongst others. Whilst the band didn't write many songs and only gigged a few times a great time was had over those two years and Mike grew and grew as a player. He was tought by Tony Thorpe of 'The Rubettes' at college but dropped out of guitar lessons in the second year as he felt they offered him little new knowledge. The course was a success and he left in 2002 with an Advanced Diploma in Popular Musics. In 2003 Mike went to Brunel University in London to study a B.A. in Music. Sadly, within a few weeks of starting Mike realised that he'd made a mistake enrolling on the course and returned to face an uncertain future. For a few months Mike spent the rest of his student loan on wild nights out in Liverpool with his friends.... Music and guitar playing was forgotten. His experience at university in London.... The cost.... Snooty Classical Music Students.... The realisation he would leave with a huge debt, the fact a degree might not help him get a job in the music business, and the fact his band had split up before going.... chipped away greatly at his desire to play guitar and write music. He sold most of his music equipment feeling it was time to "Grow Up" and get a proper job. 2004 would again prove to be a pivotal year. In October he met the love of his life and slowly but surely his optimism returned.... Along with his desire to pick up the guitar again. Over the past three or so years Mike has aquired new equipment and has developed into a more muture more refined guitar player.... No longer trying to be a show off, just content with writing and playing great songs.... The gap had done him good musically speaking. Mike has gotten heavily into blues music and considers this his true calling. Gilmour is still his ultimate hero, but players like Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout and Hendrix are also amongst his greatest influences. Mike now lives and works in Warrington, sharing a house with his girlfriend Liz and a pair of wooden elephants called 'Eddie Norman' and'Little Eric'. In real life he actually never speaks in the 'third person' and has a voice that is inaudible to humans. He can , however, communicate freely with baboons, gibbons and hump back whales. Sadly Mike has been unable to make use of this rare talent. He is currently working on his first album 'The Layback Blues'.
