MFP started circa 1997 in the basement of Tommy Deane. At that time he was taking guitar lessons and instead of learning how to play he spent more time learning how to produce and put songs together through layering of instruments. After putting the beats together he sent a copy off to Smooth 12, his cousin, to listen to. When the third original member, Speakman, heard the beats he instantly started freestyling to them and it was eventually decided that a group should be started.
The name MFP is derived from the three desires of money, fame, and power. These three things are what they wanted to achieve through music without becoming greedy. Originally the group consisted of three members; Tommy Deane, Smooth 12 and Speakman. Each member represented one of those desires. Tommy was out for the money, Smooth was in it for the fame, and Speakman represented power.
In 1999 Tommy compiled his instrumentals into MFP's first release, "moneyfamepower." It was never meant for sale in stores but for family and friends. The following year, while both attending Drexel University in Philadelphia, Smooth 12 and Tommy Deane worked on a single for Smooth's then girlfriend. The song was "I Always Wonder Why," which appeared on "moneyfamepower" in instrumental form and would later appear on MFP's first official group release.
Finally, in 2001 Smooth and Tommy had enough time, money, and energy to put together "Midnight Expeditions Through Backwoods and College Campuses." It was a full length CD with vocals, guest appearances, and complete CD layout. You could find the CD at local record shops in Philadelphia and Allentown. Five years later and MFP is getting ready to make a comeback.
