Quad Almighty and The Powers that Be are taking the world of independent hip-hop by storm! This innovative amalgamation of raw social commentary, accompanied by live instrumentation, adds new depth to the milieu of the hip hop band. The biting lyrics of Quad Almighty (McKinley Perkins IV) are reinforced by The Powers that Be, a live hip hop ensemble featuring a bassist (Dr. Quin), a pianist (Beck Berger), a drummer (Poet) and a D.J (Butta L). Comparing their live shows to revolutionary academic lectures that deliver personal epiphanies like brutally honest portraits of the oppressed, bursting from the tonal center of arrangements by Dr. Dre and The Sun Ra Arkestra, Quad Almighty and The Powers that Be take audiences on an ambitious journey to the rebellious heart of hip hop music.
With musical roots that span the globe, this indie super-group joined forces in 2007 with one common goal: to make unforgettable music!
Raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the shadows of the Worlds Largest Music Festival, Quad Almighty grew to appreciate an eclectic palette of independent music. The son of a celebrated drummer/percussionist, he was inundated by music and musical theory from a young age. Quads initial musical aspirations were to be a percussionist, like his father. However, after being exposed to the likes of Redman, Talib Kweli, Big Pun, Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Dead Prez, Nas, 8Ball & MJG, and Common, to name a few, he realized his love of lyricism.
His music career formally began in 1998, as one of the founding members of the hip-hop group Hazardous, whom came to be known around the city of Milwaukee as H.A.Z.; H.A.Z. is an acronym for Hungry and Zooted. Hungry for change but Zooted with contentment is the slogan the group members used to describe their social disposition. Performing at numerous open-mic events and local talent showcases, H.A.Z.s lyrical abilities gained them a strong local following. In 2000, H.A.Z. released their debut E.P. entitled, Oral Elations (B-Boy Universal 2000). Shortly after, Quad Almighty collaborated with ADI, the lead vocalist of Milwaukees local hip-hop/soul power house, A Growing Nation, and released an E.P. entitled What the Fuck (B-Boy Universal 2001). Both E.P.s won mass appeal throughout the region by way of a grassroots promotional campaign, sparked by local performances and considerable album sales. Spins on Whitewater College radio, MSOE (91.7 WMSE) as well as Milwaukee (860 WNOV) radio stations helped to boost the success of both projects. In 2002, H.A.Z. released the self-entitled L.P., Hungry and Zooted. The album is loaded with work from some of Milwaukees leading hip-hop producers and is still considered a hip-hop classic in the region. Through his endeavors with H.A.Z., Quad Almighty earned the opportunity to work with local hip-hop icons including: Taste Emcees, Growing Nation, and Black Elephant.
In 2005, Quad Almighty relocated to Brooklyn, NY and began work on a debut solo project. When it came time to pick producers for his most personal album to date, Quad looked to Finsta (one half of the Brooklyn based hip-hop duo Finsta & Bundy). Finsta & Bundys works include the underground favorites: Feel the High (parts 1 & 2), Who I Be and Sunnyside which were released on Big Willie Records.
Quad Almighty and Finsta have come together to create, THE ROYAL PARCHMENT: THE INDOKTRINATION OF DYNASTIK RATIONALIZM, Quads solo debut L.P. The L.P. is a combination of lively tracks, comical punch-lines and conscientious overtones. It is sure to draw the attention of Hip-Hop fans worldwide when it is released in spring 2008.
The Quad Almighty E.P. is the prequel to THE ROYAL PARCHMENT and is available online (www.quadalmighty.com). It gives you a healthy appetizer platter from THE ROYAL PARCHMENT and includes the single In Case you Didnt Know, plus other highly anticipated jams such as: Head in the Clouds, Revelations, and Not My Type. The digital listening experience is mind blowing by its self but when one experiences the musical influence of The Powers That Be during the live performance, only then can you begin to understand the appeal of such an exciting act. Thought provoking word-play, paired with a genuine commitment to eviscerating all conventional limitations of musical genres, clearly sets Quad Almighty & The Powers That Be apart from the rest.
Yes. Catch me in NYC in the meantime, but I'll be in a neighborhood near you very soon! Stay Tuned.......
