Metaform is a project focused on producing weird sounds and music that you can relax to. After many years making drum and bass and dancefloor lead music, I have found a niche for producing ambient, mellow and IDM music as a counter balance.
Anything else?
Review of Metaform's debut album "Home Cooked" - By Nuff X The album starts softly with a sweet and charming opening song "Leon's Imagination" and follows with the darkness laced Google Whacking". This really is a stamen for the whole album, a statement that says this isn't BBP, this is Metaform. Although the similarities between both of Simon's projects in the way they are created and some of the sounds he uses it's clear to see he wanted to branch out and try something that was the opposite of his dance floor filling Breakbeatpimp persona. Often the album consists of simple yet highly emotional and effective melodies layered with sweeping pads that drift around your ears the best example of this I could find on the album was "Plastic Implosive Lullaby" which is a stand out track for me. Following from where "Plastic" left off we have the equally wonderful "February Sun Stroke". The album takes a switch shortly afterwards and steps up it's game with a stonking track "The Day Dub Took Hugo" with it's crunchy beats and bouncy bassline it's the most accessible track for those coming from Breakbeatpimp straight to Metaform. A personal fav for sure. After an interlude track of just plain weirdness in the form of "Open up a Second Trench" the album goes back into it's softly sweet IDM roots with the beautiful "Scatter" and is followed up by the truly great IDM/breakbeat fusion of "Inter-Inertia". Final track "walk away" seems to lack the charm of earlier tracks on this LP and suffers from sounding a bit out of place, probably one people would skip when listen through the album. Production wise you can't fault it, it's as clean and polished as anything you'll hear from Simon, and there's a distinct style running throughout only really lost on the final track. Although it takes some time to get going, I tell you it's worth it in the end. Metaform has constructed one of the best IDM albums I've heard on soundclick and can stand with his head held high with the likes of USB and Northcape with this debut album. Highly recommended. 4/5
