Band/artist history
LYRIQUE was born in Armenia (South America), a poverty stricken town in West Central Colombia in 1982. At only 6 months old, Lyrique was taken away from her mother, and passed through impoverished foster homes for two years. Lyrique was finally adopted by her existing mother and father and brought to the Portland, OR. where they lived for five years until her family moved to Arizona. Throughout elementary, junior high and high school, Lyrique joined every choir possible and during the summer she enrolled in music camps and took piano lessons. As a freshman in high school her music teacher took notice of her musical talents after she heard Lyriques solo rendition of, His Eye on the Sparrow. Her choir teacher soon after asked Lyrique to be the first and only freshman to join her junior and senior choir. Lyrique transferred after two years at Sinagua high school, and finished her junior and senior years at a charter school for the arts. Lyrique studied jazz dance and joined three choirs. Lyrique came to Washington in 2000 after graduating from high school to obtain her Bachelors Degree in Cultural Justice. She continued with her music ambitions and joined a live musical group and a performance ensemble that allowed her to continue with her music but did not allow her a good musical release. During her spare time from work and school she began writing lyrics and composing songs that reflected her life and studies. During her years in college she studied psychology and sociology that allowed her music to begin developing into to strong and present female voice that was establishing on paper like never before. Lyrique began writing about society and politics and was able to reflect on pain from adoption and tough years in Arizona dealing with gangs and racism. In 2003 Lyrique met C.A.U.T.I.O.N Ceo of a recording studio. Lyrique was finally able to share her music and collaborate with the most influential and renown rap and spoken word artist in the Northwest. Lyriques interested in music was first inspired by artists like Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, and Aaliyah and influenced by ground-breaking artists like Lauryn Hill, Destinys Child, and Ms. Dynamite. Lyrique has begun her career as a unique female lyricist and singer sharing both truth and justice in her raps and songs in hopes of becoming a positive role model and inspiration for females. Currently, Lyrique is working on her solo cd Kalydascope scheduled to drop in 2006.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
COME CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR THE GROWN AND SEXY WAY. DON'T MISS OUT OR YOU'LL BE LEFT OUT WHEN EVERYONE TALKIN BOUT IN THE NEW YEAR!!! I do perform live almost every week and love every moment of it. It is the most rewarding feeling to see people know your lyrics and dance to your music.
Your musical influences
Aaliyah is number one for me. I still have her first 2 singles she came out with on cassette tape, "age ain't nothing but a number" and "at your best". Before her, I had all of Gloria Estefan's cd's including when she joined with miami sound machine. Aretha Franklin will always remain the number one diva though. Like Mary J. Blige, also a diva, you can feel all that she feels when she sings. Aretha's earliest cd's raw in the studio singing while playing the paino gives me goosebumps.Lauryn Hill came as an unexpected arrival in my life, as well, when she starred in Sister Act 2...I would say my greatest inspiration and favorite songs to sing are Lauryn Hill's renditions of "His eye is on the sparrow" and "joyful, joyful". No one can do it like she did, but I feel truly alive when I perform these songs acapella and for some reason I can't sing any other songs quite the way that I sing those two.
What equipment do you use?
I work in my fiance's studio, mostly digital. I have made a few beats on the motif, I am plannin in geating more into production in this next year.
