Princes of Darkness are a project begun by David Giovacchini, guitars, and his son Lido Giovacchini, saxes, as an off-shoot of their work together in Ahl-i Nafs. They wanted to make music that was incredibly beautiful to listen to, that touched the soul. Music that was simple, stark, with plenty of space-- just the two of them and their instruments. We call it jazz but it's not your dad's jazz, unless he was from Scandinavia. It's free but not sqeeky-squaky.
We have spent the last few years leading an free jazz/world fusion group called Ahl-i Nafs. We played often in the Bay Area, usually as live accompaniment to silent films. We wanted to get away from the full band thing, and do something with just us, and perhaps a bassist or percussionist sometimes, something quieter, spacier, with more emphasis on melody.
We play live all the time. It is what we live for. We play in cafes, museums, art galleries, libraries, movie theatres. Not your usual soul killing bars. It's all connected.
