Richard Zencker's first piano lessons were at the French School of Music in Plainfield, New Jersey; later, he also took up the violin. He studied piano, music theory and composition at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and later was active as an amateur violinist, violist and program annotator with various community and semiprofessional orchestras in New Jersey, New York, Virginia and Texas.
As a professional musician, he has worked as a pianist, organist, and in musical instrument sales. He was Music Director for classical music programming for several years in the early 1980s for WTJU-FM in Charlottesville, VA and later worked for WSKG-FM, an NPR station in Binghamton, NY. In the late 1980s he was Operations Director for KUHF, the NPR station in Houston, TX, where he developed the weekly radio program "The Piano Bench" and presented classical music daily. He currently is employed as a computer programmer and analyst.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Although I have not performed publicly in over 10 years, I don't consider this "studio" work as I don't do any overdubbing or post-production. I find if I "fix" mistakes through editing, the result seems artificial.
Your musical influences
I'm influenced by everything. Popular genres are all around and one can't avoid being influenced by them. On the other hand, I deliberately seek out classical music because it isn't otherwise easy to find in our culture today. In general, I am uncomfortable categorizing music.
What equipment do you use?
These are real-time improvisations recorded in a single take on a Yamaha CLP-811 keyboard.
Anything else?
This site contains my complete album Melencolia I, copyright 2002. The title refers to an engraving by Albrecht Dürer; the image next to the song titles is a detail from the upper left corner of the engraving.
