True Love's Divine True Love's Divine
The eclectic sound of Miya Aisha is a sophisticate blend of gritty latin-jazz, neo-soul, r&b, hip-hop, and funk. She has a love for allpeople and all cultures; therefore, she embraces all music--as long as it's good music!Band/artist history
FYI: Miya Aisha was born as Miya Aisha Mitchell in Atlanta, Georgia, where she began the enhancement of her musical abilities like many; singing in church and school choirs. She grew up in the shadow of a legacy of musicians with two grandfathers; Charles Chuck Willis,a featured artist on Atlantic Records and the other, Paul Mitchell, an Atlanta jazz legend. Both of Miya Aishas parents instilled a musical spark as they performed with various artists, such as the S.O.S. Band and Isaac Hayes, carrying her to almost all rehearsals. Added to her young accomplishments are experiences with such world renowned choirs as the Young Singers of Callenwalde and The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Youth Choir. She studied under the leadership of the late Moses Hogan and Robert Shaw as a classically trained Vocalist in her earlier years; however, she found passion with the neo-soul style being surrounded by poets and jazz, funk, and R&B musicians her entire life. In her early college years she began performing with the Capital City Opera and Americolor Opera Co., gaining more musical and Broadway-style theatrical experience. Her career began with poetry, an attentive ear, and a passionate flare for creative, fine, and performing arts. As a result, one might describe her sound as sophisticatedly eclectic; combining poetry, rap, jazz, hip-hop, and blues while making references to the pains and joys of love, laughter, and living.Have you performed in front of an audience?Yes, I perform locally around Atlanta and have plans to do a small promo tour in the fall of 2006. I'm getting more used to performing live. I've entertained audiences of varied sizes since the age of 5 and you'd think that I was used to it--I'm really not
Your musical influences
I began as a classical performer and listened to mostly female opera singers like Maria Callas and Kathleen Battle. I somehow convinced myself that if I listened to other singers too heavily, I would lose my own identity as an artist. However, I began listening to Chaka Khan and, of course, admired her power and the passion in her voice and lost my fear. I love latin music, so I listen to all genres of latin music, like salse, merengue, cumbia, bachata, REGGAETON...and the list goes on and on. Also, I've got a passion for dancehall so you may hear a little island flare every now and then. I love the originality and the freedom involved in neo, jazz, and other similar genres and it seemed to be this huge boom of artists coming out and being accepted in mainstream entertainment...Musiq, Lauren Hill, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu , India Arie, Donnie, Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Floetry, Anthony Hamilton, etc. etc. etc...Talent just started pouring out and finally I began seeing that it was possible to do this. I mean, really do this, while staying true to myself. I am a huge fan of such artists as T.I. (crazy support and congrats go out-we went to school together and I am so proud of what he's doing), Beyonce,My Chemical Romance, Dido, Fall Out Boy, Nas, Fiona Apple, Faith Hill, Jay-Z, OutKast, and that's just the beginning! Even new artists like Janelle Monae have given me crazy inspiration. Seriously I just don't like to limit myself. Result: Today I might write country love ballads; tomorrow, I'd be writing alternative head bangers; and the day after, indulging a rhythmic soul clap. Either Way, it's got to be good music. What equipment do you use?
