Rise of the Automaton was started in 2005. I've recorded some stuff off and on over the years under that name as well as with various other projects, including Doomsday Scenario, Divine Misfire and the sound collage act Crackhead.
I've always been enamored with music my whole life and distinctly remember when I first heard old 90s industrial music with its heavy use of dialogue sampling. I'd never heard anything like that before. It was a big inspiration along with the 90s rave scene for what I went on to create later. Also, my love of dialogue sampling led me to discover hilarious sound collage like CassetteBoy and Wayne Butane. These audio artist comedians were a big influence on the work of Crackhead, a sound collage project I would later be a part of.
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult for the movie sampling. These guys were just amazing at this and their music is incredible. They have been a huge influence on me. I love them.
Lords of Acid for their wild synth riffs. This band always had the most intense techno keyboard sounds. A classic.
Dust Brothers for various reasons but predominantly for the Fight Club soundtrack. It's just perfect. If a CD could be worn out mine would have been ruined.
Ministry for their Rape and Honey era. it was almost like punk rock dance music...pure brilliance.
Skinny Puppy because they are just so damn bizarre and the movie sampling is top notch. There really is no one like these guys. I think there have been many who have tried but let's be real. No one has pulled it off. And also, can we bring up the fact here that Skinny Puppy isn't just some band that released great stuff a long time ago? They've continued to do so year on year. Their whole catalog is just wild. I don't know how these guys couldn't have influenced other electronic artists. As far as industrial music goes I don't really think you can discuss the genre without them being a part of the conversation.
And of course Nine Inch Nails for Broken. That EP was the highpoint of pure raging self destruction...utterly amazing and truly depressing. That one struck hard.
