Just about a fucked up day, and how no matter what it'll be ok.

Hip Hop General

Blurring the boundaries between hip-hop swagger and the live fast die beautiful attitude of rock stars, you'll find Concept Oner. As full time member of cult-group American Trash Republic, designer, entrepreneur, and now solo artist, Concept has paid his dues both in the streets and musically, pushing to speak for an entire generation that has up until now been left without a voice. "When people think about Chicano rap, they automatically assume it's all about lowriders, gangsters, drugs and violence, and while that is a part of it, there's so much more to our culture than just that," says Concept. "We have art, family, passion, and a desire to achieve." To prove his point Concept has independently released his first solo album "To Die For", and is making quite a stir in the Latino community and beyond. Concept Oner, 25, was born and raised in the streets of Denver, Co. Around age 12, bored with school, and influenced by the streets, he first began to feel the tug of being pulled in two directions at once. One being art, drawing, and the hip-hop music that he loves so much, and the other being the criminal world which he was surrounded by. Convicted of multiple felonies by age 13, he spent the next couple years in and out of jail, group homes, and foster care. During this time he would spend his time drawing, writing raps, and freestyling. By the time he got out, and found himself back in the scene he was already making quite a name for himself at local parties and battles. Eventually the same dilemma of the streets vs. art began to tug at him, and music wasn't paying the bills. "Surrounded by hustlers, and being in and out of the projects all day where there's nothing but crackheads, and I need to make money, not to mention the fact that nobody wants to hire somebody who looks like me," Concept laughs, "the choice was all too easy." Concept began to build up his reputation even further, but this time a different kind of reputation. "Now when people would look at me instead of "yo, that's Concept the rapper", now it's "hey, there goes Concept the money maker!" he says with a grin. "But I always knew that I want to make music, that I'm an artist." In 2004 along with several long time friends, American Trash Republic was formed, and a year later they released "How Dying Saved My Life", which quickly gained an almost cult-like following in Denver and even has begun to spread to other cities across the U.S. Taking the hustle and applying it to music business is when he really started to unify the two sides of his personality. Now in 2007, having moved to Los Angeles (Boyle Heights) and with executive producer credits on 3 albums, graphic design credits on 2 albums, appearances on numerous albums, American Trash Apparel clothing line, and now his solo album under his belt, Concept feels that he is ready to take it to the next level. "There's a giant nitch that needs to be filled, so when I make music, I'm speaking for my hood, for my people, for all of our struggles and our triumphs, and nobody else is doing that right now."
