More coming...Have you performed in front of an audience?Yes. Whenever I can. I'm in the process of putting together a band to play out more.
Your musical influences
My influences are: Shawn Colvin, Seal, Duncan Sheik, King's X, the Beatles, Marvin Gaye, Clapton, Alana Davis, D'Algelo, Lenny Kravitz.
I guess I would categorize myself as a groove oriented, acustic, folk-rock artist. As much as I love R&B and black music and as much as it has influenced me, I tend to swing towards a rock sound then the R&B sound. What equipment do you use?
I use to have a Roland 1680, whick is what I recorded the majority of these songs on. Now I use Cool Edit Pro. I use a 70's Contessa acustic (Made by Harmony in the 70's), Fender Tele electric, 70's Fender twin reverb amp, and a really cool Sony condensor mike for miking anything!Anything else?
A little Bio perhaps? Here goes...
grew up as the son of a charismatic minister. Ive always been very musically minded. I remember making up rock song melodies to lyrics in hymnals when I was bored in church. My Dad played drums in the 60s in several bands in the Baltimore, MD area. I remember when we first setup his old 1968, red-sparkle, Ludwig kit (which I still have) in 1981 and he played. I was always so mesmerized. It was the same for guitar. I was almost shocked that sounds so pretty could be played by anyone who had an instrument! Well, almost anyone!
I think my first thoughts on playing music professionally were when I was in a black church in rural North Carolina. Our churchs would meet together on Sunday nights. I remember seeing this guy play the drums and he played with all this energy. Cymbals were flapping around and the bass drum was thumping my chest. White churches normally dont have this energy. I got hooked! Im always trying to find that feeling when I play/write. Its a natural high.
I took classical guitar lessons in the third grade and started writing songs at nine or so. It was exciting. The idea that I could put together cords and words and create something unique was overwhelming! I played drums in church for about 12 years which, surprisingly, taught me lots of diversity and sensitivity as a musician. I also played in several garage bands, but I always knew there had to be more to this musical gift.
I moved to Nashville, TN in 1994. Nashville was a big eye-opener and an even bigger learning experience. A big part of my musical growing up years took place there. I played with numerous bands and songwriters for about nine years there. I began to realize my influences and musical tastes. It was also in Nashville that I started writing my own songs pretty seriously.
These songs are a collection of the past and present. Youre Over There was written while going through a divorce, while You Keep Me Holdin On is about the stability of marriage!
