Band/artist history
Encompassing elements of EBM, hard rock, electronica, post-punk, industrial, gothic, breakbeat, orchestral, middle eastern, and experimental musics on WEIGHTLESS, their debut full-length disc for Neue Ästhetik Multimedia (home to past, present, and future releases from artists such as Judith, The Shroud, Das Ich, Faith and the Muse, and many more), Seattle-based artists DOLL FACTORY are issuing a siren call from the underground with a sound, style, and attitude that is uniquely their own.
"There's nothing precious to us about trying to fit in with a particular pre-defined style or scene," say Garrick Antikajian, who, along with
partner-in-crime Chris Roy, shares all songwriting, production, vocal, instrumental, and programming duties for DOLL FACTORY in the studio (live, the band expands to a four-piece including Mars Saxman on keyboards and Invisible Records recording artist Jason Bazinet of SMP on drums). "If anything, we've made a conscious effort from the very beginning to distance
ourselves from the well-worn cliches people usually associate with 'industrial' or 'electronic' music."
"People usually like to have a frame of reference for new things, but my goal is for us to sound like Doll Factory, and become one of those bands
that other people get compared to," adds Chris.
With 'WEIGHTLESS', DOLL FACTORY are already well on their way to doing just that. The eagerly anticipated follow-up to their debut 'teaser' release, 2000's "Premonition E.P." - which, in spite of being a limited promo-only release for clubs, college radio, and press, garnered critical acclaim in magazines from 'Outburn' to 'The Sentimentalist', radio and club play in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and Russia, and topped online-music charts on sites such as mp3.com, where the release spent the better part of a year dominating the site's alternative rock, industrial, electronic, and dance charts - 'WEIGHTLESS' combines driving dance beats, unforgettable guitar hooks, orchestral soundscapes, mind-bending electronics, and experimental sonic mayhem with a lyrical and vocal delivery that ranges from quietly
introspective to harrowingly in-your-face - sometimes within the same song. Bolstered by a series of compilation and remix appearances such as Cleopatra Records' 'Unquiet Grave III' and 'Tribute to Marilyn Manson', Iregular
Records' 'Teen Feeding Frenzy', Invisible Records 'SMP - Hacked' remix disc, Eternia, Ltd., UK's 'The Nature of Gothic', and others, DOLL FACTORY is taking to the road in support of 'WEIGHTLESS' beginning in Fall 2002.
"Five out of Five! Seattle's DOLL FACTORY combine guitar driven industrial rock and creative electronics on this invigorating E.P. which features three songs and three remixes..."
- Outburn Issue 13 (2000)
"Dynamic Industrial Duo - Kapowww! You wouldn't believe me if I told you the thick, layered, mature sound of DOLL FACTORY comes from but two musicians. Fortunately, I'm not too concerned about your conception of my veracity. The
E.P.'s lead-off song, "Touch", will surely be appearing in clubs near you. The only downside to Premonition is the fact that it is an E.P. - we hope to hear the debut full-length album soon."
- The Sentimentalist Vol. II, Issue VI (2001)
"This sounds good. Very good. F*cking awesome are two words to describe this new industrial rock band which also mixes in thumping electronic beats."
- Die Mongoose Die (U.K.) (2000)
"DOLL FACTORY's "River of Light" is a great thumping electro track full of non-stop dance floor grooves and gritty vocals."
- WetWorks ElectroZine (March 2001)
"Very cool industrial...like a mix of Pig (Raymond Watts of KMFDM) and Chemlab. Not to be missed!"
- Revision (September 2000)
"DOLL FACTORY just plain rock! This is one you simply have to hear. A bit of the 'in your face' vocal style and some really cool grooves mixed with various effects and fuzzy basslines. A bit in the vein of KMFDM's best."
- In Rhythmus Bleilben (2001)
"Now this is my kind of music! With industrial influences stretching from Pigface to David Bowie, this veteran combo/new act mixes the sounds of KMFDM, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, and even Marilyn Manson (well, sort of...) to make a damned great track. Listen...now!"
- Dancing Bagel (2000)
""Touch (Spider-Like)" is a great blend of drum 'n' bass meets industrial metal. A combination that I would have never guessed would work. Original pumping rhythm that keeps you moving."
- Anarchy, Inc. (2000)
"Awesome industrial from Seattle. Damn, I envy our cousins for thriving off the dreary cooler atmosphere up there! Check this out, it's definitely a mood maker!"
- Family Values Internet Radio (2000)
"Delightfully dark! Very distinctive industrial rock that was born well away from the light. Chaotic sounds with a serious fast rock groove and intense vocals make this a superb song. This will stick in your head. Put it there."
- Underworld III Internet Radio (2000)
