Columbia, South Carolina natives Kenyatta Cantey, AKA Indy, and Corey Gillens, AKA Ozy, collectively form the Hip Hop duo SPADES IN MIDNIGHT MALEVOLENCE. While the spade represents the trump suit in a deck of cards; 12 o’clock a.m. being the beginning of a new day and the peek of night; and malevolence or mischief describing their curiosity for self-expression; this title ideally expresses their intent to make major waves in the entertainment industry. The duo established an appreciation for each other’s talents as classmates in a sixth grade literature class. They soon began daily rap sessions in the school cafeteria that persuaded them to pursue rap as a profession. In addition to participating in their local church choirs, other musical influences have proven to be significant to the SPADES’ musical background.
The SPADES sight such artists as Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Nirvana, and The Roots as major influences. Indy’s high vocals, animated personality and obscure style and Ozy’s laid-back character, emphatic vocals and eccentric delivery complement each other well. With comparisons to such artists as A Tribe Called Quest and Outkast the SPADES stand out in a league of their own. This duo’s unique style of classical expression bridges the gap between the underground that they so love and the mainstream audiences that need the messages they bring. “Our music is an eclectic illustration of life,” says Ozy of the group. “Partying is definitely big in our music and so are our concerns about society,” adds Indy.
A motivational occurrence came while the duo ventured to New York in 1996, at age 16, to meet with A&R rep Kim Spikes, formerly of Electra Records and currently with Tommy Boy Records. She saw the SPADES’ talent, and also gave suggestions on how they could improve in order to earn much needed attention. As a result, the SPADES have showcased their talent at the FOX Theatre (ATL), University of South Carolina, Clark Atlanta University, where they both attended school, and also at Atlanta night clubs: Kaya (now club Vision), the APACHE Café, Moorepics (The Poetry Planet), the Paschal’s Carousel Lounge and most recently the New Brookland Tavern in Columbia, S.C. The duo’s energies are focused upon bringing Hip Hop back to its glory days while simultaneously pushing it forward into a new era of musical and lyrical affection and creativity. The SPADES’ game plan is to make music from the heart that represents real life situations of consumers in every race, culture, and spiritual denomination. This plan will take shape through pulling their entertainment companies MOONDOX, Limited/MoShine Edutainment to the forefront. With artists Nefarious, Sinister Skyy, Believe and the UFO’s the S.C. Hip Hop scene will be an unstoppable force. Currently killing the radio airwaves of South Carolina and underground Atlanta are “Incredible S.C.” and “Finally!,” the first two singles from the SPADES freshman LP “Between Times: A Southern Breakthrough.” With production by talented up and comers Illa, Koda, Dinosaur and J Lyrical, the SPADES will satisfy the eclectic appetite of today’s forever growing Hip Hop audiences.
Yes.All over S.C. and ATL for now. All performances are special for us.
