Acid Lemon Juice was born in Early 2003 when Luis & Del met in East London. Del was impressed with Luis's DJing skills and Luis was blown away by Del's guitar playing and musicianship. Luis asked Del to teach him to play bass and Del agreed. Nearly two years on, Luis still can't play bass, but from their interactivity and mix of musical styles has emerged the sound of Acid Lemon Juice- a new generation of house music- sexy, tribal, dark, deep, hypnotic. (But don't take our word for it- check out the downloads page and hear for yourself... ) Now a fully fledged DJ double-act, blending together their favourite records from across the whole spectrum of funky house - from deep tribal to Latin soulful - they are beginning to establish themselves as an act not to be ignored. They have played venues across London including the Q-bar in Whitechapel and Industry in Shoreditch and held down a residency on acclaimed Internet radio station Worldwide FM.
Band/artist history
DJ Tavares (Luis to his friends) was born in Mozambique in the late 60s. He was exposed to tribal music from an early age and retains a passion for it now. In the mid 70s he moved to Lisbon, Portugal with his family where he stayed for several years before moving to the North of Portugal. Music has been his passion for as long as he can remember. He was introduced to the club scene by a friend's father who owned a club in Coimbra. Whilst spending time in the club he began to watch and admire the DJs. He fell in love with the experience of being in the booth and started to ask questions about how it was done. He learned to mix by the age of 15 and by 17 was warming up for bigger DJs. Eventually he was invited to mix on a local radio station and remained in Radio DJing for several years. At 24 he moved to Portimao in the Algarve. He began work in the evening slot for a radio station there and also spent the weekends DJing in clubs. In 1996 he moved to London to continue to DJ and build his collection of dark, funky tribal house music. He has played venues throughout the West End, South West London and Private Parties. If Luis is the Acid in Acid Lemon Juice, Del is the Lemon. A self-confessed technology geek and computer nerd, he was born in South West England in 1980. He first picked up a guitar aged 8 and has barely put one down since. He quickly developed a taste for blues-based rock music, and guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Carlos Santana still influence his playing style. During an angst-driven drift into grunge in his teens he began to compose his own songs and played in several bands around the South West. He moved to the West Midlands in 1999 to study for a psychology degree and whilst there started to realise the benefits of using computers for music production. Following a brief crossover period he has now made the transition into dance music, having developed a taste for melodic, soulful, funky house. He began to DJ soon after his move to South East London in late 2002 and continues to incorporate smooth blues guitar tones into some of ALJ's more uplifting house tunes. He knows a lot of people called Phil.
