"My band, my band, my baaand..." (Sorry, Eminem and I have the same birthday so that hook's been in my head for months.)
I'm Maggie Kim. Singer, songwriter, bassist, programmer, producer. I'm a solo artist but have a great backing band called 17RED. I'm a little crazy, a little wild, a lot exposed. I've won things, I've been on the radio, I've seen myself in magazines, I've played in front of famous people, but there's nothing I love more than making music for people who care.
Maggie Kim was the winner of the first JANE Magazine Reader CD contest, beating out thousands of contestants. Her first gig was playing the party JANE held in her honor, flying her out to L.A. to perform in front of heavyweights like David Geffen and Richard Branson. She was a finalist in the Shure Musical Roots contest and her songs are being played on XM Satellite Radio, CKLN 88.1 FM and Radio Indie-pop, among others. She's been featured in The Washington Post, Fox News and the New York Observer. Maggie is currently being filmed for a documentary about rising Asian-American artists.
Yes! New York, New Jersey, D.C., and L.A. There's nothing like performing your own songs in front of people. I've had so many special moments because I've played for such cool people. But the one people can't stop talking about was our last Mother's Day gig--partly because of my Janet Jackson NippleGate moment, partly because I threw a beer bottle into the audience after pouring it on myself... That about sums up a Maggie Kim gig.
The music is alt pop/rock with a little hip hop soul thrown in. My influences are Beck, Madonna, Missy Elliott, Prince, The Cure, PJ Harvey.
