Band/artist history
Formed in 1993 Initial Lineup: Shaun - Vocals Marcus - Guitars / Vocals Darryn - Bass Jason - Drums The band spend '93 writing and rehearsing material and then spend the following years gigging and saving some money for some studio time. Downfalls first proper demo 'green faced clown' (4 songs on cassette tape) recorded at Beehive Studios, Middlezoy. All 300 copies sold out within two months Downfall come runners up in a national battle of the bands at Wolverhampton 'Inside You' recorded for a local compilation c.d. 2 more tracks recorded for another local compilation c.d. Ginja quits to form what will later become Syphon Downfall record and release the 'Digital Minds e.p.' which sells out very quickly, despite a poor review in Kerrap! (Sorry, Kerrang!) Downfall record the 'Wha Twi LLb eCoMe?' EP at Foel studio in wales. Given some mixed reviews, but again sold very well. Bassist Darryn quits and Justin Mirto (ex-stupidicus) joins. Downfall offered a distribution deal with Statue Records, but the band declines it. Keyboardist Dave quits, never to be replaced! Downfall build 'The Collective studios' a 48 track recording studio. Bassist Justin quits and Tristan (ex-Sharp End First and Phion) joins. Downfall start writing and rehearsing material for their first full length album. Downfall start recording material for their debut album (working title 'Reversal') Mike joins as second guitarist, and promptly leaves again. Tom S Joins as second guitarist. The band support Dry Kill Logic and resume gigging after a year of writing and rehearsing album material. A video for Crossfire is shot and then put on hold after long-time Downfall vocalist Shaun retires. Work on the album is also put on hold when the studio is forced to close, due to the industrial estate being demolished to make way for luxury riverside housing for yuppie scum! Downfall spend the remainder of the year seeking new premises for the studio and a new vocalist. The band found a replacement for Shaun, in the form of Tom H (ex-Hatekills). Tom Joined in February and made his live debut in July, when Downfall supported Napalm Death at The Palace in Bridgwater. Most of 2007 was spent looking for a new premises for the studio and trying to find places to rehearse, with some sporadic gigging. Towards the end of the year, Marcus finally found a premises for his new studio and construction of the new Collective Studios became our main focus. The first part of the year was spent building the studio. The studio was finally completed and opened to the public in March and now serves as Downfalls base of operation. During the build process, Downfall also wrote some material towards a 2nd album, despite the fact that work on album #1 (working title 'Reversal') was not complete. As usual, there was sporadic gigging throughout the year, including a great gig with NWOBHM legends Cloven Hoof in the summer, plus a couple of gigs with Tesseract. In September, Jason spent two days in the studio recording drum parts for Downfalls 2nd album (No working title as yet!). Due to the sheer volume of bookings at the studio (and his own hectic schedule) Tom H was unable to get enough studio time to record all of his parts for album#1. So in October, Downfall collectively decided to release an EP with four of the tracks from album #1. The 'This Way The Wicked Comes' EP was officially released at a Downfall gig on Halloween. The first batch of disks promptly sold out that same night and the EP continues to sell well! 2009 is going to be a busy year for us. We've got our first gig of the year at Hobbits in Weston Super Mare on the 13th of January. (And we're looking forward to many more!) Tom is going to be booking some studio time soon so he can finish recording his vocals for the tracks on our first album ('Reversal'), so we can finally mix and release it. In the meantime, the rest of the band are going to be recording parts for the tracks on album #2. At the moment we have no set timeline for the album. Downfall also have some unconfirmed local dates supporting Napalm Death and The Berzerker...Fingers crossed on those!
Have you performed in front of an audience?
JasonDownfall will play anywhere and everywhere. Pubs, Clubs, Concert Halls, Stadiums we're not fussy, as long as we're doing our thing! We've played pubs and clubs all over the u.k. In '97 Downfall got into the finals of a national 'battle of the bands' held at Wolverhampton, but we're not really into the whole 'battle of the bands' scene. Music's not really a competition or anything! Over the years we've played with the likes of Dry Kill Logic, Napalm Death, Stampin' Ground and NWOBHM legends Cloven Hoof. Plus hundreds of underground UK metal bands (past and present) including: Tesseract (the rising stars of the UK underground metal scene), Gutworm, Descent, Exit-Wound(RIP), Age Of Ruin(RIP), Fourwaykill(RIP), Twin Method, Sharp End First, Flayed Disciple, Modus Operandi.
Your musical influences
Jason - As previously stated: Downfall mix extreme-metal with more contemporary metal to create something we feel is unique. We don't aim to sound like anybody or anything in particular. Generally our music is loud, fast and heavy. But as musicians, we're just trying to push ourselves beyond our personal boundaries and improve our playing on our respective instruments. (Hopefully cranking out some killer tunes whilst doing so!). We all listen to a lot of music...And not always metal stuff. But some metal bands that we all like and listen to a lot, who've influenced us in some way are:- Carcass, Terroriser, Faith-no-more, Pantera, Slayer, Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan, Rush, Deicide, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, early Machine Head, Tool, Neurosis, Fear Factory, Crowbar, Ministry, Anthrax, Metallica and hundreds and hundreds more, the list is virtually endless!
What equipment do you use?
Marcus uses Ibanez 7 string guitars, Voodoo modified Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier amps, Mesa Boogie cabs and various Boss and Digitech F.X.Tristan abuses Warwick 6 string basses, a 300W Ampeg Head, an Ampeg 8X10 cab, an SWR 2x15 cab and a few f.x. pedalsTom H wrecks whatever mikes the soundman foolishly leaves lying around the front of the stage.Jason destroys his racked 8 piece Pearl Export double-bass drum-kit and Sabian and Zildjian cymbals with Ahead sticks and DW5000 series pedals.Tom S uses Ibanez 7 strings, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier amps and cabs and various Boss and Digitech F.X.
Anything else?
Tracks from the new EP 'This Way The Wicked Comes' should be uploaded very soon!
