The Feminists are a Vancouver based rock band. The group, formed in November 2001, consists of veteran indie scenester Keith Grief and Capilano College Jazz Studies students Allyson Mara, Cory Curtis, and Mike Zobac.Band/artist history
The Feminists came into being when Grief hired Mara to play keyboard parts on the debut album of Hunter Gracchus. This collaboration led to Mara co-producing eight tracks, and an invitation for Grief to come and see her jazz trio play. He came, he saw, and he was impressed by the work of bassist Curtis and drummer Zobac. “Sounds like Pink Floyd”, he said, “only different”. Thus The Feminists were formed.
Keith’s thoughtful and timely lyrics depict Chapin-esque characters moving through the bazaar of everyday life. The music is
reminiscent of The Beatles, Ben Folds Five, the Rheostatics, and also contains the improvisatory elements of Pink Floyd and modern jazz.
The Feminists have received national radio play with their single “Las Vegas Breakdown” on CBC Radio 2. They were also chosen as the Featured Artist on NewMusicCanada.com. The Feminists performed at New Music West, having being chosen as one of the top 200 bands of over 1400 submissions (after only playing 2 shows!). There has been interest from
Arpix Media Inc. in Toronto and Feldman Agencies regarding the licensing of their work for film and tv projects. Most recently, a series of first
place finishes has led them to 3rd place overall in the finals of Bandfest 2002, Vancouver’s premier new music competetion. The Feminists have also just been named “Canada’s hottest new musical talents” by PickTheHits.com.Have you performed in front of an audience?Canada.
