Patrice's CD "Following A Dream" combines rock, blues, a little country with strong singer/songwriter sensibilities. She is a prolific songwriter, mostly inspired by the vast pool of music from the late 60's/early 70's. She is a self-taught guitarist and also plays piano. After many years as an illustrator/graphic artist, Patrice wrote her first song in 1999 and keeps writing 'em. Nine of her songs won Billboard Song Contest Honorable Mentions and one was a finalist in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. She would like to keep recording and would love to pitch her songs to other artists.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes, I am trying to play live as much as possible. My songs lend themselves to being played solo, or with a band. I enjoy both, and of course it depends on the venue. I'm a little too rock for some the folkier coffehouses, and I'm not rock enough for some of the alternative clubs, so part of the challenge is finding appropriate venues.
Your musical influences
For songwriting there are so many people I admire, but the ones who influenced my songwriting the most are the Beatles and Joni Mitchell. Very different for sure, but what they have in common to me is complex, beautiful melodies. Some of the early Beatle songs sound simple, but when I've tried to figure them out, I'm struck by some of the chord changes. When I figure out a Joni Mitchell song, it's as fulfilling as writing an original! I started copying Joni Mitchell on the piano a long time ago, even her guitar songs, which had a big impact on the way I play. Having said that, I worship Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan (whose voice I love). The other voice is Paul Rodgers- if I had to pick a favorite, it's him. My all-around hero is Steve Winwood. His voice, songwriting, playing- I admire him immensely, same with Sheryl Crow for doing it all, as well as Prince, Marshall Crenshaw- great songwriter, guitar player and voice. I have always loved Bonnie Raitt. I copied her a lot and always thought her voice was one of the best. Before I ever heard any of these people, I loved the songs of George and Ira Gershwin, especially when they were sung by Ella Fitzgerald- probably my favorite singer.
What equipment do you use?
Fender Strat, Gibson Les Paul Studio Model, a vintage Kalamazoo acoustic guitar, piano... hoover upright, eureka cannister, dirt devil hand-held, and alas, no dustbuster
