Psychedelic Rock

The group "Зазеркалье/Zazerkal'ye/Through the Looking Glass", formed in 1987 in the USSR, is one of the oldest Russian groups still existing under its original brand. "Zazerkal'e" has always gravitated towards experiments with the forms and content of the current underground. Psychedelic lyrics and music are synthesized with odious musical genres such as Dark wave, Pop-psychedelic music and Post-Soviet Eclecticism. The album "Synthetic Products" is made in the aesthetics of the pop-psychedelic mysteries of the 1960s. The album was recorded in the studio of the Palace of Culture of the Synthetic Products Plant (NZSP) in the village of Oktyabrsky (a district of Novocherkassk). The Novocherkassk Plant of Synthetic Products has long since turned into post-Soviet ruins, but the Palace of Culture exists and continues to release its "synthetic products", which sometimes resemble the chants of some visionary sect, appealing to the symbols and meanings of the Age of Enlightenment, Freemasonry and natural philosophy. The album was recorded by the members of the "Zazerkal'ye" line-up from the early 2000s. The specific instrumentation and recording process made the album almost entirely "analog". Album "Ten songs 2010" was recorded in Rostov-on-Don in K. Novozhilov's studio in 2010. Mixing and mastering were done by UPLIFTO sound engineer Roman Galushkin (Agent Smith). The album includes several old well-known songs from 1991-1993, two, perhaps, the earliest songs ("Blind Girl" and "No Fuck Left") from 1989, and two, new at that time ("Wooden Pea Jacket" and "Heart of the Earth"). The goal of this work was the desire to hear old songs in a certain studio quality, because this was the problem of the Looking Glass of the 1990s. The album is played by the participants of the Looking Glass of the 2000s, already known to you from the previously published album "Synthetic Products" of 2024. STAR CROSSED OTHERS American singer and songwriter Sara Ayers is consistent in her eclecticism. Her music ranges from punk to electronic and ambient. She has collaborated with the likes of Japanese dark ambient experimentalist Ryuta.K and Russian electronic trio Figura. British electronic kings the Chemical Brothers sampled Ayers Everyday We Die a Little in Come Inside, and her EP with New Shiny Things was recently reissued on vinyl by German label Anna Logue Records. A small joint project of American singer Sara Ayers and musicians of the group Zazerkalye. Recording, mixing and mastering were done in the studio of the DK Zavod Synthetic Products in 2009. A live recording with elements of improvisation, where the combination of classic rock ballads and ambient, sometimes turning into noise, will give you unforgettable impressions and experiences. Британские короли электронной музыки Chemical Brothers использовали сэмплы «Everyday We Die a Little» Айерс в «Come Inside», а её EP с New Shiny Things недавно был переиздан на виниле немецким лейблом Anna Logue Records.
Band/artist history
The group "Zazerkalye" was created in Rostov-on-Don in the fall of 1987. One of the most significant rock groups of the Don rock of the 80-90s. In 1988, after a scandalous performance at the rock festival "Tagan-Rock" in Taganrog, the group distanced itself from the Rostov rock club and performed at various venues under constantly changing names: "Banner and Dove of Peace", "Pittsburgh Penguins", "Indira Gandhi", "Davka Downov" and others. In 1989, Oleg Gaponov came to Zazerkalye from the Rostov group Peking Row-Row. The group's popularity peaked in 1989-1993. "Zazerkalye" has always gravitated towards turning life into an ancient Roman theatre, experimenting with the forms and content of the current underground, boldly mixing yard and soldier folk with art noir. Psychedelic, pseudo-Nietzschean texts with subtle mockery of everyday conspiracy theories, images of romantic and sentimental literature of the century before last are synthesized with odious musical genres such as post-punk, synth-punk, electro-punk, industrial, synth-pop and darkwave. From all this, a bizarre grotesque world is born, frightening and attractive at the same time. In January 2006, the audiovisual drama "Bright Light" was presented in Rostov-on-Don, created by the group "Zazerkalye" and the artist-animator Yuri Bessmertny. The group still exists.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Of course, "Zazerkalye" played many live concerts. The most memorable was the concert in Moscow in 2005. Before going on stage, a strange bearded man with an old leather briefcase approached the band members. He fell to his knees in front of the vocalist and lyricist Oleg Gaponov. And, hugging his legs, called Oleg "the new Dostoevsky". There was also a strange concert in the city of Anapa in 2008 in front of an absolutely empty hall. It was an open summer venue with a very low fence, so crowds of listeners were along the perimeter of the concert venue. People did not even have to pay for the concert and enter the hall. Everything was visible and audible anyway.
