THE JAFFA CAKES Promo
Can you imagine a cover band that arranges the most famous songs in different styles and genres while keeping their "sing-along" peculiarity? THE JAFFA CAKES is an original band (since February 2016) based in Dublin. It turns world-famous songs into unique versions, mostly jazz, swing, and blues, combining post-modern flavors and different styles to create their signature sound. All the performers are Italian, they met by coincidence in Dublin and after a jam session decided to work together. Started as a standard jazz duet (piano and vocals), and they found this new way to perform almost as a joke, but given that the result was unexpectedly remarkable, they decided to leave the standard jazz project and create THE JAFFA CAKES. Just three instruments: the expert Paolo Zuddas on the drums, Grammy-nominated Dario Rodighiero on the piano and backing vocals, and bubbly performer Plinny Phoenix as lead singer. They did the first gig twenty days after their first meeting. After two months they won the battle of the bands at the famous Skull Sessions at the Sin é Pub in Dublin. The Jaffa Cakes then performed in Italy and all around Dublin: busking in the famous Grafton Street, Aviva Stadium, Blooms Festival, Polska Eire Festiva, Italian Fusion Festival, and many more.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Best memories are in the rehearsal studio. When we started, we had a studio in the basement of the Chocolate Factory in Dublin. It was such an inspiring place where you could meet not only musicians but also artist of any field. The other great memories are with our audiences at our gigs: from the Art Cafè, a nice cafè in town that unfortunately doesn't exist anymore, to festivals like the Blooms, the Polska Irish Festival, and the Italian Fusion Jazz Festival. We loved and still cherish the support from our fans!
Your musical influences
We all have different backgrounds playing different styles of music. We've been inspired by Jazz standards, Italian & International Folk music, and Italian Songwriters. But really we got inspired everywhere and from anything creative!
What equipment do you use?
The Jaffa Cakes born minimal, with just small drums and percussions (once Paolo the drummer played a pub wooden stool at the semifinals of Skulls Sessions at Sin è Pub in Dublin - that the Jaffa Cakes won), piano, and voice. We always been asked why we missed a bass player, but we actually liked the peculiar sound of bass notes played by Dario at the piano. It all made our signature sound.
