KOMMIKAL is a bi-lingual (Maori/English) artist who really truly does defy deskription. His music covers so many styles and moods from his signature die-hard awe-inspiring staunch and challenging ruthless Maori warrior war-cry haka-based anthems to his smooth subtle laid back n lazy chillaxed out tracks as well as the odd next level unconventional space cadet freaky ballad of some sort. If one had to slot him into a genre it would have to be something along the lines of Hip-Hop-Reggaeton-Drum-n-Bass-Reggae-Electronica-Tribal-Experimental. As well as Composing, Beatmaking, Recording and Performing KOMMIKAL is a DJ, Audio Engineer, Producer, Actor, TV Presenter and Drive-time Radio Show Host for New Zealand's HipHop, RnB, Roots/Reggae & Maori Music station TAHU FM. Essentially KOMMIKAL is an all round Broadcaster Extraordinaire and Musical Genius! KOMMIKAL is of Maori, Scottish and Italian descent. His tribal Maori roots stem from Te-Ati-Awa, Ngati Mutunga, Ngati Tama, Kai Tahu, Kati Mamoe and Waitaha. He is the youngest of 7 kids hailing from Otepoti, but for now hes based in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Band/artist history
KOMMIKAL's music is ever-evolving and transforming with highly provocative songs exploring such themes as extraterrestrial invaders from outer space, motivating messages of self-empowerment for the lost and destitute, bold statements about world-wide indigenous struggle, political satire, advice to the greedy and rich, waterway and general environmental pollution, love/hate relationships and simply being evil and cool. Most of KOMMIKAL's songs are in Maori with most having an English version and a bilingual version for those who are culturally diverse and open-minded. KOMMIKAL has several past released tracks such as the hard-hitting anthem Tuturu off the Gifted & Maori RnB/Hip-hop compilation album, Whiro from Gifted & Maori Volume 2 and the Tenei Te Ruru Reo Kai Tahu RnB/Hip-hop compilation album as well as several other Maori and English tracks and mixtape joints already independently released. KOMMIKAL is currently involved in the production of two separate music albums as well as an experimental Hip-hop influenced laid back lounge music project for the grown and cultured folks. He is a member of the band Lamp & Couch and he has been a part of the Puha Crew since 1998. In the past KOMMIKAL has performed as supporting act for the international Hip-hop artist Busta Rhymes and he has shared the stage with other such artists as Savage, Mareko, The Deceptikonz, Adeaze, Hollie Smith, Taos, Jay Roacher, Nesian Mystik, Adam Whauwhau, Spacifix, Infared and Karizma (a.k.a. Kalisima). KOMMIKAL has always been a non-smoker and he drives an immaculate ghetto-green 1977 Statesman Deville.
