The Stray Dawgs are from Plantation, Florida. Lew Dawg Cloninger is the founding member and plays guitars and sings (many people refer to it as hollering).
Founding member Steve Sallaz plays bass, sings and also does most of the mixing and mastering of our recordings. He also plays a variety of percussion instruments.
We have many other musician friends that help us out at live shows as well as recording. Huge thanks go out to Susan Ivory Blue who has played piano and organ on many of our recordings and gigs. Also special thanks to Lew Knapper for his help with Texas blues harp on many of our songs.
Started this band in 1999 as a duo with the great singer Nadine Naujoks. She moved to North Carolina in 2003 and we reformed as a different kind of group. At one time we had as many as seven players in the band. We have had a couple of different names (Close Enough being one). We have had the same line up now since about 2010. We have had the name "The Stray Dawgs" since 2006. Some others (band members) have come and gone but the core has remained the same. Steve Sallaz has been in the band since 2003 and I consider him to be as much a founding member as myself.
We do occasionally play live but we have been working on new recordings as of late. Because we use many side players, our band is like the hillbilly version of the Alan Parsons Project.
Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Brown, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Lennon-McCartney, The Glimmer Twins, Leon Russell, Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jerry Jeff Walker, Hank Williams Sr., David Allan Coe and Pete Townsend. The list goes on forever. Thank God for all the great musicians and song writers in the world who speak not only to emotions but also truth to power.
Fender American Deluxe Tele, Fender American Deluxe Strat, Takamine F349 acoustic, Gibson 00 acoustic, Martin D12E Acoustic, Laney amp for electric, Peavey and Fishman for acoustic. Bass Player Steve Sallaz uses Fender Highway bass and other Fender basses. He also has an LTD fretless bass.
We like to create and perform new music and we like to put our own signature on covers of other people's music. To have an appreciation for music is a great thing in life. To learn how to play an instrument is another great step. To be able to perform music for people is also great. To write your own music and perform it for others and to even have people buy your music is almost the ultimate. To make a living as a musician writing and performing your own music IS the ultimate. We are not there, but we would love to be.
