Hi, I'm gobbledygeek! This is all my terrible home recorded music! Never had one lesson!
Hi, I'm gobbledygeek!
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Nope. Wouldn't want to annoy people with this stuff.
Your musical influences
As I write this in late 2012... First tape I bought was either Tom Petty's "Full Moon Fever" or The Northern Pikes "Secrets of the Alibi". Got into local Canadian bands like 5440 and Grapes of Wrath, plus bigger bands such as U2 and R.E.M. My car has a tape player, so I still copy the rare CD purchases I make to tape in order to play them in my car. I then really got into Neil Young and decided I wanted to try to play guitar. Walked into the only music store in a local mall, they had one electric guitar, so I bought it. It's the only electric guitar I've had for 20+ years. Kinda looks like a heavy metal shred guitar, pretty funny, cuz it's not my style at all. Nirvana broke and so I got into a bit louder stuff, such as Dinosaur Jr. Also got poppy with bands such as The Lemonheads, as well as Sloan and their Canadian counterparts The Inbreds, The Super Friendz, etc. Around the same time, I discovered Teenage Fanclub. Unlike other bands which I've been into then slowly drifted away from over the years, I've remained a constant fan of Teenage Fanclub to this very day. Every musical direction they take seems to be in step with where I'm at in my life (even though my music doesn't reflect theirs very much at all). Me and my groomsmen walked down the aisle at my wedding to their song "What You Do To Me". As I've gotten older, my tastes have mellowed. Really started getting into Elliott Smith and Hayden, and decided I wanted to attempt to make my own music, in spite of the fact I can't sing or play instruments. I got myself an 8 track recorder and started making my own songs. I cried when I first heard my recorded voice; oh well, it's the only one I've got, nothing much I can do about it. First recorded just with electric guitar / effects, then added a keyboard, then finally got an acoustic guitar. Got a harmonica this past Christmas, I can see it showing up on more of my future songs. Been into lots of other groups over the years (The Breeders, CCR, The Cowboy Junkies, Iron & Wine, The Jayhawks, Simon & Garfunkel, etc.). My songs are all sincere and, unfortunately, ultimately failed attempts at copying these artists; it is what it is. To date (late 2012), I've recorded upwards of 80 songs. I think my quieter, sparser, simpler songs come off a lot better than my louder / cluttered stuff, and my newer stuff is probably a lot better than my older stuff. So far I've uploaded my best stuff (seriously, that's my best stuff right there); the quality drops off dramatically after that, but I still might eventually upload most / all of my crap anyways. It's tough listening to older songs where it's just so obvious I shoulda done something different to make it better (why did I mix the piano so far back? why did I repeat that section 4 times when clearly 2 times is better? etc.); oh well. Right now, I rarely buy CDs. There's only two artists whom I'm patiently waiting on their next CD and will purchase unheard (Teenage Fanclub and Hayden).
What equipment do you use?
Acoustic Guitar Electric Guitar Keyboard Harmonica DigiTech Genesis3 (guitar effects) Zoom MRS-1044CD (digital multi-track recorder) (not a gear head in the least, I don't have the patience to twiddle with these things, only just know barely enough to get by)
Anything else?
Not really sure why I'm posting my songs. Thanks for listening to any of them. GcluelessmusicnoobG
