The best Dracula movie ever made was Hammer Studio's DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE (1969). Like Christopher Lee, Porno Dracula refuses to die. Birthed in the bleak Manhattan winter of 1987, Porno Dracula debuted at CBGBs, opening for the False Prophets, during one its desolate Sunday afternoon hardcore matinees. Porno Dracula would go on to play nighttime gigs at CBGBs and grace the ungraceful stages of the Lismar Lounge (haunted by the ghosts of mafia victims), Tramps, Lauterbachs, Pyramid, Sanctuary, CW Post College, and some Bowery saloon that catered to winos and only sold ripple. 1987 was the heyday of the Cure, Siouxsie & the Banshees, and Love & Rockets, so Porno Dracula should have been a darkwave band, but the lead singer associated goth with Long Island poseurs, so Porno Dracula became a 1977 style punk rock band instead. Never respected by the East Village bohemian elite, Porno Dracula was branded "scum rock" alongside fellow travelers Da Willys, Scab, Hammerbrain, Roadkill, Knock Out James, and Letch Patrol. Porno Dracula endured several personnel changes, but the "legendary" line-up featured the late Leon Ross on guitar, Manon Briere on drums, and Johnny Fastlane on bass. Other members include: guitarist Jason Goodrow, drummer David Lindsay, bassist Nick Marden, and a nice English chap named Benny who played bass at the first Porno Dracula gig. Not to be excluded was Porno Dracula's manager Jonathan Reisbaum whose participation in the 1988 police riot in Tompkins Square Park (and Avenue A and adjacent streets) giving "New York's Finest" a richly deserved middle finger was videotaped and frequently broadcasted in the ensuing weeks on the TV news.
