David's Memories of Hank Williams go back into his early childhood, listening tolimited recordings on an old phonograph, and a local radio station. Family members playing and singinglistening to songs from the legend, captivated his interest. This intensified and increased his thirst for Hank's music. Through the years, as he developed his own style, whether it be bluegrass or the traditional style country that he is noted for, Hank Williams music continues to have a lasting impact on David's vocal style and his writing techniques. "Americana" best describes the music of Singer/Songwriter David Church. With years devoted to both country and bluegrass music, Church has finally gained recognition throughout the world. He has been featured artist in numerous magazines, newspapers, and websites, including, www.truecountry.com, "HEET" magazine a monthly publication based out of Chicago with worldwide distribution. Heet features internationally recognized country artists. He has also appeared on prominent websites such as CountryReview.com, and Truecountry.com websites devoted mostly to mainstream country artists. David spent 10 years in bluegrass with the group he created "Open Highway" where he produced 4 albums and gained regional popularity performing throughout the Midwest. In 1999, he met his partner, singer/songwriter, Terri Lisa. They decided to investigate the country scene and recorded a duo album in Nashville, produced by prominent producer/publicist, Dick McVey. The album titled, "Custom Made" was released early 2001. Custom Made was met with immediate success upon release to the world market. Many songs on the album have received airplay all over the world. The song "You've Got the Key" written by Joe Collins, climbed to the # 1 position in The Netherlands, #6 in Germany and #6 in Italy. In addition, the song received an overall rating of #11 for most airplay in a 6 month period. Early 2002, David and his wife Terri Lisa were invited to perform with a promotional tour, "Western Heart Promotions" and performed all over Europe at over 35 venues in prominent cities in Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, and Belgium. They were featured on numerous radio shows. Church has also gained popularity among Hank William fans. Hank Williams, as with many traditional style country artists, was David's mentor and idol. As Church developed his own style, he paid close attention to the late legend and studied both the writing techniques and vocal style. He performed at the 50th Anniversary Memorial to Hank Williams in Montgomery, AL. He led members of the original "Drifting Cowboys," at the grave site in the song "I Saw the Light" written by Hank Williams Sr" Clips from the memorial appeared on National News on both CBS and Fox network, and several regional newspapers posted the picture of Church leading the Cowboys on the front page. His tribute show, called "Images of a Country Drifter," includes historical narration and 20 songs performed by Church. Included in the band, backing Church for this prestigious event was the legendary Don Holmes, who gave up a spot on the Opry to be at the memorial and performed with David. Also present in the audience were additional members of the "Drifting Cowboys," including: Jimmy Porter, Clent Holmes, Lum York, and Braxton Shuffert. Other celebrities performed including Jack Green and Stonewall Jackson. Numerous comments were made among several celebrities and dignitaries also present in the audience regarding the incredible likeness of David's voice to that of the late Hank Williams. Mary Wallace, president of the Hank Williams fan club was astounded by the performance, and asked David to come to the Hank Williams Festival in June in Georgiana. David recently performed at the festival. In March, he recorded a tribute album titled, A Legend Froze In Time, including legendary Hall of Fame steel player, (original Drifing Cowboy), Don Helms. The album also features a 20 minute interview with Helms discussing his life on the road with Williams. The album was released in Zanesville, OH, where Don Helms also performed with Church to 3 standing ovations! Church performed at the Hank Williams Festival in Georgiana, in front of over 10,000 Hank Williams fan club members and enthusiasts. He was voted by the fan club to be the best entertainer at the festival. Among his band members were, Don Williams,(nephew of Chet Adkins) Bob Saxton, lead guitar player for Patsy Cline, as well as other famous musicians. David had the honor of meeting Jett Williams, Hanks daughter. Jett and her husband Keith were very impressed. Keith commented that he had never heard any better tribute artist. One of the most endearing and powerful performances included 2 legendary musicians, Don Helms and Bob Saxton. Don Helms is the legendary steel guitarist who played for Hank Williams Sr, and Bob Saxton, legendary thumb-style guitarist played for numerous country legends including Patsy Cline and Merle Travis. They have developed strong friendships, and perform together on many occasions!
