Rilwan Calfos aka Buddha-Zulu-Shak or aka Scrutiny(white mouse)is a taoist born in Lewisham on the 17th of July 1967;the day the great jazz saxophonist John Coltrane died.Buddha zulu shak is a talented soloist, vocalist,songwriter and composer who is competent also in playing a few instruments such the flute,piano and the bass guitar.He has been performing for some years now as a jazz vocalist since the 1990?s when he studied jazz singing improvisation at Morley college,the City Literary institute and Goldsmith college.He further went on to study acting.He has won two community awards by the London Arts Board and Scarman trust.Both his voice and lyrics as a soothing, progressive, positive,unique and futuristic modus vivendi effect or impact.His lyrics touch on universal ecological issues and end of days. He is politically,economically,socially and technologically inclined in the world music scene.He is well versed in many music genres ranging from jazz fusion/jazz latin,Afro-beat,jazz funk ,Bossa- nova ,Gospel,Blues and a tinge of classical music.Buddha shak?s voice will take you on a trip to the unknown twilight zone with his un mistakable interpretations of other jazz icons such as Gil Scot Heron,Al Jareau,Bobby Mcferrin,Mark Murphy,Micheal Franks and Roy Ayers. He has been greatly inspired by other artists such as Seal,Jamiroquai, Lonni Liston Smith,Bob Marley,Antonio Carlos Jobim,Elis Regina,DJavan,Fela Kuti,Donny Hathaway,Sting,Miles Davies,Jimi Hendrix,Jim Morrison,Stevie Wonder,Ray Charles,Jaco Pastorious,Hubert Laws,Chick Corea,,Marvin Gaye,and Teddy Pendergrass e.t.c.His favourite producers vary from Gamble and Huff,Trevor Horn,Quincy Jones, to Tommy Lee Puma. Buddha zulu shak has performed at such venues as Bug bar, Soundminds,London Diorama,Bedford Arms, and Theatre Technics.Buddha Shak has recorded two albums up to date , and is currently working on his third album scheduled for release in 2010.His ambition is to persuade society to change it?s ways towards the quality of life and to be closer to the majestic sun.He is also interested in cinematography and photography.
