The dance rock/new wave/post-punk band Sportas (engl. The Sport) had played in a large number of concerts (more than one hundred) which took place in various Lithuanian clubs and festivals.
Sportas is especially loved by Lithuanian students and youth. Especially because of the lyrics, shocking texts and crazy performances, which had some rudiments of variete.
The band was formed in year 2001 by the vocalist and well known Lithuanian underground hero - avantgarde musician and programmer - Marukqs (Marukas). The first steps of the band were made in underground festivals.
We had a great help from Saulius Drunga for writing our first songs. He was the winner of Canes festival for the best scenario on year 2007.
Marukas claims that he was influenced by Sex Pistols, Kraftwerk, soviet commedy, 80-ies dance music, Monthy Python, Perdro Almadovares and japanese rock.
That time the first two member of the band where Tomas P?linys and Marukqs. Later Marukqs invited Pup? D?d? to join the project. P?linys has quit the band because of the lack of the time. Then Gau joined the band. The trio played with a drum machine. Later, punk rock legend Smalk? started to play the drums. He never had his own drumset (or noone remembers it).
On the year 2002 free downloadable postpunkish records appeared on the internet. With deep, cynic lyrics, simple melodies, funky music and expresive mad vocalist of the band were great success not just between indie music lovers, but also by regular studends hungry for fun, rock and dance.
Domantas Razauskas shortly was performing as a second guitarist (he actually replaced the guitar player Pup? D?d?). At that time Lyn?as (Mantas Banišauskas) saw the ad in a music shop and he was chosen to play with "Sportas". Guys had their rehersal in a small and wet garage in Antakalnis district.
The band Sportas many times took place on the Lithuanian national TV (LTV) song contests and once they won the first prize on the year 2004 with their song Policija (Police).
On the year 2005 the band had released their first radio single Beibi ("Babe"), which was played on small national radio stations and it was the soundtrack of the movie Perspektyvi pora (Perspective couple, director K?stutis Gudavi?ius) which had a great success in AXX cinema festival (more than 3000 people viewed this movie on local cinema theaters).
The adventures of the leader of the band Marukas where described on the book of Nerius Pe?i?ra Vilniaus kiberpoema ("The cyberpoem of Vilnius"), which was sold in biggest Lithuanian bookstores.
On the spring of year 2005 local newspapers described a love story of Marukqs and his painter gothic girlfriend Twiggy, which was using a human blood to paint her pictures.
On the year 2006 the band released their radiosingle ?dra ("Otter). The lyrics of this song describes a girl which looks like otter (a small predator animal which lives in Lithuanian rivers) and which is riding a trolleybus "Solaris (paradoxal reference to Andrey Tarkovsky movie title and Czech trolleybus brand name). The mellody of this song references to Vietnamiese folk and 80-ies electronic music. Donate-us (Donatas Bakonis) played bass guitar for some period of time.
Gurkis (Ar?nas Kem?šis) returned from Poland this year and the band started to play in Latvia, but then all the guys except Marukas concentrated in pop and rock music projects and the drummer went to work abroad.
Then after great success of the band in Latvian radiostations and concerts in Riga and Liepaja the album Žemiau juostos (Below the belt) was released. Young guitarist Andrius Katinas (he just graduated his musical education school) and experienced drummer with Brazilian and Russian blood in his veins Seržas joined the band. Marukqs now plays the bass and sings.
pop-rock-electro-punk. The mix of powerchords from the rock dinosaurs to the feeling of disco. Satyrics, agresive and intelligent dance rock.
The nicknames of current performers and instruments:
Marukas (Marijus Bernotas) vocals, keyboards, programming, effects
Andrius Katinas (Andrew Katinas) - guitar, back vocals
Wide (Vaidotas Segenis) - percussion
We play live! Live performances are followed by some weird decorations. We use old russian analog synth "Polivoks" and small "Casio" keyboards in our life performances.
