Arcane is a band which existed in a certain place during a certain period of time. That time and place was Charleston, WV around the year 1997 A.D. Arcane consisted of high school kids who just wanted to be cool and make weird punk music (ive heard it described as "middle eastern punk") Arcane has not played together in 7 years, and most likely will never play together again, though the members keep in touch every now and again. Ive made this page as an archive for the recordings made of Arcane during their heyday(joke) Anyway Arcane is:
Paul Bowles-Drums
Chris Field-Lead Guitar
Patrick Stephens-Vocals, Rhythm Guitar
Stinky Rodriguez-Bass,vocalsBand/artist history
Arcane started with two kids with a dream. That dream was to be the best band Charleston Catholic High School had ever seen. We wanted to melt the faces of the faculty, to rock the asses of the administration, to teach the truth to the young black youth. Okay so maybe not so much the last one, point is you might want to skip this and go right to the music. Anyway Paul Bowles and Patrick Stephens(me) started playing and writing horrible songs together. As misery loves company, they eventually sought out more people to share this horrible music with. "We totally need a bass player", said Pat. "Yeah, lets call my friend Joel, he can play bass." Joel Masinter could indeed play bass, and Paul and Joel had been in a band before making music that would make a puppy's
ears bleed in horror. Unfortunetly Joel decided to move on from his life making horrible music, and never joined Arcane. At this point you must be thinking, "If Joel was never in Arcane why include it in the history." The answer is you're right, and I don't know I just wanted to put Joel in the story. Paul and Pat(the two saints) then tried a few of their friends from Catholic before finally coming to a decision between Stinky Rodriguez and Chris Field, who were both guitar players and not bass players. The eventual decision put Stinky on bass and Chris on guitar. What emerged was different musical energies that combined to produce pure magic. The energy of punk flowed from the frantic competency of Paul's drumming. The bombast of heavy metal flowed from Stinky, whether he was playing bass or subbing on vocals or guitar. From Chris emerged a cornucopia of American musical energy, blues, jazz, funk, folk, and pyschedelia from a stylized and crystalline pure point of view. As for myself I believe I organized these energies into a format that made sense to me, and projected them outward.(note: if you are taking me too seriously, please stop now)We wrote and worked
on several songs over the next 3 years, performing when we got the chance, and recording with our mutual musical guru/guitar teacher Chuck Biel. After Stinky and Chris graduated they moved and basically that was it. I plan on posting some of the Chuck Biel sessions as well as some live soundboards from Common Grounds. Enjoy.Have you performed in front of an audience?During the years 96-98 we played several places in the Charleston, WV area. The majority of our live shows were played at the infamous(perhaps legendary) Common Grounds coffeehouse and all ages club. We've played on the bill with Walden II, once doing a benefit show for Habitat For Humanity. We also played at some weird karate school/all ages club in Dunbar a couple of times where the kids pretending like they were playing football while we performed. We played the battle of the bands in the Capitol Theatre(97 or 98, i forget) winning 3rd place($50 prize). Lastly, we played the Charleston Catholic talent show, where we finally got a chance to "stick it to the man".
