Ape House's acclaimed sound combines the unbridled energy of The Ramones and The Buzzcocks with the melodicism of The Knack and Cheap Trick.
Band/artist history
In the early months of 2001, mutual friends introduced home recording enthusiast, J. Forté to bassist Steve Shook. The duo were quick to enlist drummer/brother Greg Shook and guitarist Gil Hegwood, both formerly of Love Slug fame, and thus the Washington, DC areas premier power-pop quartet come into being. Greg, Gil and Steve added a sense of explosive energy and infectious enthusiasm to Fortés clever, engaging pop numbers, and listeners soon began comparing Ape House to the likes of Weezer, Cheap Trick, the Undertones and the Knack. Popular venues such as the Black Cat, Galaxy Hut, Velvet Lounge and the Ottobar have played home to the bands tight, powerful sets, and attendance is continually on the increase as the bands renown grows. In May of 2001, Ape House recorded and released an independent four-song EP, simultaneously introducing the world to the sound of Ape House, and Ape House to the sound of critical praise. The next year, the band released its debut full-length LP ...Minutes To Go... on Crof-töne Records. Upon its release, publications such as Shredding Paper, The Big Takeover, Splendid, Punk Planet and Music Monthly took notice and spread the word about the bands catchy tunes and keen pop sensibilities. Ape House continues to make waves in the U.S. and abroad. The band was among nine semifinalists chosen from a field of 500 DC-area bands to compete in the annual WHFS 'Big Break Contest,' and its perennial crowd pleaser 'Chicks Dig Speed' was inked as an editor's pick in the Washington Post. Across the Atlantic, ...Minutes To Go... has been heard on the airwaves in France and Portugal, and CD distribution has been set up in Japan. The band is currently recording LP#2 at the venerable Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, VA and look for a late 2003/early 2004 release.
