Anne Price is a versatile and gifted singer born and raised in New York City. She sings a wide variety of traditional folk songs and many songs from contemporary songwriters, as well as songs she has written. Her wide repertoire includes Appalachian ballads, Irish and Scottish songs, cowboy songs, country songs, songs of the sea, songs about work and the labor movement, feminist songs, and love songs. Interpreted with her strong, rich, expressive voice, Anne's songs can be funny or sad, thought provoking or moving.
Band/artist history
I first performed in public in 1965 when I was a student at Hunter College in the Bronx, New York. I went back to performing in public in 1979 and I never stopped. For 15 years I had a singing partner, Marilyn Maltzer, until she passed away in 1994. Our one album together, is now available as a CD. Starting in 2003, I was part of a folk group called MacDougal Street Rent Party, along with Joel Landy, Eric Levine, Gina Tlamsa, and Steve Suffet, although I also continued to perform by myself. The band dissolved after Eric's death in 2008, but I still often appear with the remaining members, particularly with Steve. I now often perform as part of a duo with my friend Rita Deutsch. We call ourselves Hudson River Rose.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes. In coffee houses, clubs, schools, libraries, political benefits, folk festivals, house concerts, and anywhere else I can.
Your musical influences
Traditional folk music, contemporary folk music, maritime music, country music, Peggy Seeger, Joan Baez, Jean Ritchie, Woody Guthrie. Peggy Seeger once told me, "The richness of your voice astounded me." I consider that very high praise!
What equipment do you use?
Acoustic guitar, Appalachian mountain dulcimer, but sometimes just unaccompanied voice.
Anything else?
a CD of my live recordings from 1965-1966, is now available from CD Baby. Just for info.
